Dimensions in mm (D drum, B base, H height, L line entry); line size in mm. Power ratio = length of handle × gear ratio / radius of drum. Pull of handle (kg) × power ratio = pull of winch (kg): 10 kg on a 10" handle on a 40:1 winch pulls 400 kg at 100% efficiency, which internal friction makes impossible in practice.

Winch Selection Guide

  • The chart is for masthead-rigged mono-hull yachts of medium displacement; electric and hydraulic winches are selected the same way.
  • Fractional rig: go by sail area rather than length.
  • Heavy displacement: choose a winch larger than the chart states.
  • Ultra light displacement: smaller winches are normally possible, but take the righting moment into account.
  • Multihulls (catamarans, trimarans and other boats with increased righting moment): use winches with a higher power ratio.
