Destroyer Wheels (pp. 42-44)

  • Will it fit? Edson wheels have either a 1" straight bore with a 1/4" keyway and 2-3/8" hub length (#645, straight hub) or a 1" bore with an 8 degree taper, 3/16" keyway and 1" hub length (#647, tapered hub). Prior to 2000 Edson steerers and pedestals had 1" straight shafts, since then tapered shafts. Measure your existing wheel.
  • Stainless and leather wheels: 5 spokes from 18" to 40", 7 spokes from 44" to 60"; 1" (25mm) D-shaped rim, tapered hollow spokes, dished shape.
  • Teak rim: 1-1/8" laminated solid teak, delivered natural; 5 spokes from 16" to 34", 7 spokes from 38" to 48".
  • Leather: Dove Gray orthopedic grade cowhide, Standard (645LE / 647LE) or Comfort Grip (645CG / 647CG); order numbers end in -GR.
  • 3/4" tapered hub for hydraulic or powerboat steerers: order #1750. Stainless Bi-Spoke Destroyer wheels #649-36 to #649-60 fit 1" tapered shafts only.

Order # = type + size + spokes (-5 or -7), e.g. 647ST-36-5, 645LE-44-7-GR, 647TK-38-7. Weights are actual (straight hub) as printed; the tapered versions differ for 647LE-18 (5.5/2.5), 647ST-22 (5.6/2.5), 647ST-24 (5.8/2.6), 647TK-24 (6.4/2.9) and 647CG-60 (13.2/5.7).

Rim circumference: older oval 7/8" rim (flat Destroyer and Diamond Series wheels) = 2.7" (68.6mm); newer D-shaped 1" rim = 3.11" (79mm). Each kit has a pre-punched Dove Gray cover, double-sided tape, thread, needle and instructions; Edson can also install it (#716 / #716CG).
