• VRC = gypsy plus independent capstan; VR = gypsy with low profile top (available on all models). Integral VR/VRC 4500, 6000, 8000, 11000 have extended deck plates with brake band location and integral chain pipe; round base units take separate chain pipes or chain pipe rollers.
• Horizontal windlasses: single capstan to port, gypsy to starboard; maximise chain wrap up to 180°, minimum wrap is 120°.
• AC torque limiter supplied with all anchor windlass models from 6000 and above (may not be required with VFDs). Dog clutch on all except 4000 / 4500.
• Classification societies require a minimum speed of 9 metres/minute; two-speed AC or VFD drives generally up to 20 metres/minute. Muir recommends the windlass can retrieve all the anchor and chain in a vertical lift.
• Continuous pull is nominally 50% of the maximum pull. Model numbers are not necessarily indicative of the lift capacity.
• Muir requires a chain sample (with joining links and kenter shackles) to match the gypsy. The catalogue is not for installation purposes; specs are indicative only.

Mega Windlass Selection Guide

Displacement, length, type of vessel, windage and the classification society equipment number (which sets chain size, length and anchor weight) must all be considered when selecting a windlass, anchor and chain.

VR/VRC Vertical Windlasses (deduct 2kg / 4.4lb for VR models on 4500 and 6000)

Recommended minimum speed 10 / 33 m/min-ft/min for most supplies (higher on 24V DC), maximum recovery 20 / 66 (22 / 72 on the VRC6000). High pressure 240 BAR / 3600PSI hydraulics optional from the VRC6000. Electric columns are 3PH 50HZ / 60HZ unless stated; full figures for each supply and the CAD dimensions are in the PDF.

HR Horizontal Windlasses

Twin gypsy / twin capstan, twin gypsy and single capstan / single gypsy layouts are drawn in the PDF; the gypsy centre varies with chain size.

VC Powered Capstans (performance indicative only)

Standard and tall capstan versions, right angle worm or planetary and inline hydraulic planetary drives; integrated mooring bollard capstan available from VC6000 up.

Anchoring System Accessories

• Chain stoppers: chain up to 50mm, chromed or polished bronze or 316 stainless; combined chain stopper/devil claw in any chain size. Dimension tables by short link and stud link chain are on catalogue page 42.
• Low profile chain stopper devil claw roller up to 26MM; high profile up to 50MM with four pocket bronze roller; compact devil's claw/locking pawl units up to 22mm U2.
• Chain compressors: handwheel-tensioned clamping arms with integrated devil's claw, chain up to 50mm U2.
• Chain pipe rollers (316L, bronze or nylon rollers) for chain up to 50mm; chain pipes for chain up to 30mm U2; turning block fairleads; control cabinets for single, two or variable speed.
• Auto Anchor: AA150 counter, AA560 wired and AA710/AA730 wireless control and counter kits, AA320/AA342 heavy duty pendants, foot switches (150 Amps continuous rating).
