- A mechanical face seal between a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon stator on a convoluted bellows clamped to the shaft log. The rotor compresses the bellows on installation so the faces stay in contact as the shaft moves fore and aft under propeller thrust.
- The carbon stator is bored slightly larger than the shaft so it floats and absorbs most misalignment and vibration; the rotor seals to the shaft with static o-rings, so it can be fitted on shafts with some wear or pitting.
- Carbon stator lapped to 4 helium light bands (0.000044"), rated to 500° F (+260° C) and cannot melt if the seal runs dry for a short period.
- The PSS Shaft Seal is Bureau Veritas, ABS & RINA certified.

All models: carbon graphite lapped to 4 HLB (0.000044" tolerance); 316 SS / Nitronic 50 rotor faced to 9 Ra. A hose barb is recommended for vessels exceeding 10 knots (Type A, PRO).
- Type A: the most common model, for power and sailboats; satisfies most pleasure boat and smaller commercial applications. 316L rotor held by 2 pairs of set screws at 90 degrees.
- PRO: for commercial and demanding, corrosive or high pressure applications; reinforced silicone bellows, 316L rolled-edge non-perforated hose clamps, optional Nitronic 50 rotor.
- Type B: large commercial boats; Nitronic 50 rotor secured by a large locking collar in front of it; steel hoops in the bellows convolutions.
- Type C: integrated support for the carbon stator (does not rely on the bellows for weight); weld-on stern tube, flange mounted or flange & bladder configurations in aluminum, steel or 316L.

Accessories, Flanges and FlowTrue
Maintenance Kits & T-Kits
- Replace the bellows every 6 years (Type A) or 8-10 years (Type B and PRO), together with the rotor o-rings and set screws and the hose clamps; the carbon stator and rotor normally do not need replacing.
- Type A kit: bellows, set screws, o-rings, 316L hose clamps, clamp jackets, medium strength thread lock, wrench, instructions. Type B & PRO kit: the same with silicone bellows.
- Set screws are cup-point and must not be re-used; the maintenance kit includes five new ones.
- Shaft Retention Collar (SRC): keeps the shaft or rudder in the boat if a coupling fails; shafts 1” to 3” or 25 to 80mm.
- T-Kit: T-fitting, 6' of ⅜" hose and hose clamps, to tee into the raw water discharge hose and feed the seal's hose barb. Measure the inside diameter of the cooling hose before ordering.

Water Feed, Flanges & FlowTrue
- Boats that never exceed 12 knots and have no bearing usually need no positive water feed and can be vented: run the vent line at least 2-3 feet above the waterline, as close to the centreline as possible.
- Above 12 knots a positive water supply is required to lubricate and cool the faces. Pick-up examples: after the heat exchanger, after the oil cooler, after the water pump. With a pick-up below the waterline an anti-siphon may be required.
- Flanges in 316 stainless, mild steel or aluminum turn a multi-bolt hull flange into a stern tube; the bladder option (nitrile, inflated to about 10 - 15 PSI, stationary shaft only) seals the stern tube for inspection or uncoupling in the water. Bladder replacement recommended every 10 years.
- FlowTrue adjustable flow meter: polyacetal body on a 316L base; max. 176°F (80°C); flow 0.25 - 2.0 gallons per min. (1.0 - 8.0 liters per min.); pressure 0 - 360 PSI (0 - 25 BAR); ⅜" fittings; flow tube can be cleaned without interrupting flow to the seal.
- Break-in about one hour; mist underway after break-in usually means too little compression: add 1/8" to 1/4" at a time.
