Reading the Table

  • All sizes on 305 m (1000 ft) reels.
  • B.L. = cable breaking load. It does not include the typical 10% reduction in cable strength due to swaging.
  • Ratings are for standard Ronstan mill-ordered, stocked wire; wire is sometimes sourced from other suppliers and ratings may vary.

Stretch in Wire

  • All wire stretches: first permanently, as the wires bed down when load is first applied, then elastically as load increases. Where stretch is critical, initial stretch can be taken out with cables pre-stressed during swaging and cable manufacture.
  • Elastic stretch (mm) = (W x L) / (E x A), where W = applied load (kN), L = cable length (mm), E = strand modulus (kN/mm2), A = metallic cross sectional area (mm2) from the tables.
  • Typical E: 1 x 19 = 127±10 kN/mm2 (18.4 x 106 P.S.I.); 7 x 19 = 97±10 kN/mm2 (14.1 x 106 P.S.I.); 7 x 7 = 106±10 kN/mm2 (15.4 x 106 P.S.I.).
