Designations & Block Families

The first part of a Selden block designation gives the bearing system or special feature, the second part the sheave diameter: PBB 60 = Plain Bearing Block with a 60 mm sheave. All blocks in a family share the same sheave, and the sheave part number is the base of the block part number (PBB 60 sheave 406-001, PBB 60 single block 406-001-01). Sheave part numbers are stamped on the side of each sheave.

Breaking Loads, Safe Working Loads & Load Factors

  • Breaking load: the load that breaks any part of the product under successively increasing laboratory loads.
  • Safe working load: set at half the breaking load.
  • Table values are for the product itself, not for the line. The load on the product depends on the load in the line and the deflection angle around the sheave: P = k × F.
  • Example from the catalogue: halyard load 800 kg, mast base block at 90° (k = 1.41) → 1128 kg, so a PBB 70 or RBB 60; deck organizer at 140° (k = 0.68) → 544 kg, organizer size 40. This is strength only; wear and friction may call for a bigger size.
  • Genoa car SWL is calculated at a 70° sheet angle (110° deflection). A high-performance #3 genoa may reach a 90° sheet angle: 1000 kg sheet load → 1226 kg on the car.

Backstay cascade: the upper block's breaking load must match the backstay's; the requirement halves step by step for the remaining blocks, cascade legs and final tackle.

Dimensioning Blocks by Boat Size

Selden's guidelines are based on strength, function, wear and friction for yachts up to RM = 160 kNm (approx 55 feet); for larger yachts ask us. You need the main sail foot length E, the distance S from the aft side of the mast to the sheet attachment, whether the boom is end or mid sheeted, and the righting moment at 30° heel (or displacement / boat length). Boat sizes below are the figures printed on the charts.

Selden dimensioning charts: topmast spinnaker halyard block, spinnaker sheet and guy, kicking strap and Rodkicker tackle blocks

The bars on the charts run against RM 30° (kNm); read the exact range in the PDF, pages 104–107.

An unsupported high beam track (HB 22 / HB 30 / HB 42) can take the main sheet load if correctly dimensioned: the maximum unsupported length by RM and S/E is tabulated on page 108. Mount it with a minimum of three fixing bolts on either side of the unsupported length.

Pad Eyes, Blocks & Stand-up Springs

Stainless AISI 316. Safe working load applies when the pad eye is aligned with the direction of load. Hole patterns are on page 111.
