Selden Single Line Reef — Selection Guide

How Single Line Reef Works

Ease the halyard to premarked reefing points and haul in on the reefing line: luff and leech are pulled down at the same time. Guided blocks inside the boom keep the lines from tangling, and the system has a 2:1 gear ratio, so the reef goes in without leaving the cockpit.

  • Booms B087 to B250.
  • Each BS boom in the table carries an outhaul plus 2 Single Line Reef lines, all led aft to the cockpit.

How to Operate a Single Line Boom

  1. Release the Rodkicker.
  2. Slacken the mainsheet.
  3. Ease off the main halyard to the premarked reefing points.
  4. Tension the reef line up to the marked position on the line. The reef is in.
  5. Remove any slack in the other reefs.
  6. Adjust the mainsheet.
  7. Adjust the Rodkicker.

Boom Section Choice

To select the boom section you need the sail foot length (E) and the righting moment (RM at 30°). If RM is not known, displacement is an alternative. E and Y must also be known for dimensioning. Boom length is sometimes set by other factors than E (for example an over-length extrusion so the mainsheet clears a sprayhood), so the S measurement is needed as well.

  • Find your RM (kNm) or displacement (tonnes) row.
  • Read across to a section whose Emax and Ymax (m) both cover your boat; sections B087 to B300 are listed.
  • Use the masthead table for masthead rigs and the fractional table for fractional rigs.
