Shackle Load Tables

  • Rope diameter: 4 mm to 24 mm; breaking load: 700 kg to 35 tonnes across the range.
  • 316L stainless steel: the compromise between strength and resistance to corrosion. 17.4 PH (HR) stainless steel: greater mechanical strength – an HR shackle can be up to 60% more resistant than a 316L one. Titanium (Ta6V): when weight saving is the priority – up to 45% lighter than a standard 316L shackle.
  • W.L. (working load) is for nautical applications. W.L.L. (working load limit) is for industrial applications only: the safety factor is 5 times the breaking load, WLL = Breaking load / 5.

Load types for the three block families: ball bearing – dynamic operation and light load; plain bearing – static operation and heavy load; roller – dynamic operation and heavy load.

Load on the block vs. deflection angle

Deflection angle Load factor
180° 200 %
160° 197 %
140° 187 %
120° 180 %
100° 153 %
90° 140 %
80° 129 %
60° 100 %
45° 75 %
20° 35 %

Example: at a 90° angle, a load of 100 Kg on the line represents a load of 140 Kg on the block; at 180° it represents 200 Kg.

Definitions

  • Working Load (WL): the static load at which the product will still function without excessive friction or wear or permanent deformation of components.
  • Breaking Load (BL): the static load at which a major failure of one or more structural components, or complete destruction of the product, can be expected when new.
  • Units: values are given in kilogramme-force (kg). 1 kgf = 9.806 65 N = 0.980665 daN.
  • Factor of safety: apply an appropriate factor of safety to the BL for each application; for many industrial and safety applications, and some yachting applications, a factor greater than two (2) should be used or may be required. Take into account fatigue, type of load, UV, corrosion and stress corrosion.
  • Never use the products over the working load. A Wichard part overloaded between WL and BL deforms; deformed parts must be replaced immediately, preferably by a larger size.

Stainless Steel & Warranty

Austenitic Martensitic (HR)
Common name 18.12 Mo 17.4 PH
European standard X2CrNiMo17-12-2 X5CrNiCuNb 16-4
US AISI standard 316 L 630

Copper 4 %
  • 316L is non-magnetic; 17.4PH (HR) is magnetic.
  • All Wichard products are passivated. Corrosion is rarely seen in normal use, except where martensitic (HR) steel is in total, prolonged immersion; re-passivate with a passivator such as Wichinox.
  • Warranty: five (5) years against defects in materials or workmanship from the date of purchase by the original end-user (exclusions apply: improper fitting, use or maintenance, unapproved modification, UV exposure, normal wear).
  • Inspect all marine hardware regularly for deformation, wear, cracks or corrosion. Some jurisdictions require replacement of rigging components after three or five years.
