Can you buy a Lewmar bug screen on its own?
Yes, on the Low Profile line: the flyscreen is listed as its own spare, "Fly Screen Only (alloy framed for plastic trim)", so a torn screen is a direct swap and not a reason to replace the trim or the hatch. The Ocean line is different in our catalog: the screen comes in a trimkit (plastic trim and alloy framed screen), with the trim also listed alone as "Trim Only (plastic for alloy framed screen)".
How do I know which flyscreen size my hatch needs?
Match the hatch line first, then the numeric size code. The Low Profile flyscreens alone are listed in thirteen sizes (00, 03, 10, 18, 20, 22, 30, 40, 41, 44, 50, 54 and 60), and each is a different screen, so ordering by "Low Profile" without the size code is a guess. What's the difference between a flyscreen and a trim kit with a screen?
A standalone flyscreen replaces only the screen and goes into a trim that is already in good shape; a trim kit replaces the interior plastic trim and the screen together. Inspect the plastic trim around the screen opening first: sound trim plus a torn screen means a flyscreen; cracked or discolored trim means the combined kit. On the Ocean line the catalog lists the screen only inside the trimkit, so you buy the complete trimkit.
Do portlights use a different screen than hatches?
Yes. Portlights have their own flyscreens, listed by portlight line and size code, and several are clip-on. Lewmar Atlantic portlight clip flyscreens are listed in Sizes 10, 30, 32, 40 and 60; the Standard Port (New) flyscreens in Sizes 0, 1, 1RE, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7RE and 8. An Atlantic Size 40 screen and a Standard Size 3 screen are not interchangeable, even though both are portlight flyscreens.
Can I get at my hatch handles with the flyscreen in place?
Yes. What if my hatch isn't a Lewmar?
Vetus screens are also listed by hatch model and size code, so the same rule applies: identify the hatch first. The Planus hatches use a standalone mosquito screen, for example the Vetus Mosquito Screen (Planus 3023). The Altus, Magnus and FGH hatches use a hatch trim and mosquito screen, listed by size code, for example the Vetus 4242, 4747, 6363 and Altus D520. They are separate items for separate openings, so match the code to your hatch. Common mistakes
- Ordering by profile name alone. "Low Profile" or "Ocean" isn't enough: the size code decides which screen fits, and two sizes in the same line are not interchangeable. Take the size code from the hatch before you order.
- Assuming a hatch screen fits a portlight, or vice versa. They are separate part families with their own size codes.
