Lewmar Windlasses: Pick the Series, Then the Voltage, the Chain and the Deck Unit

A Lewmar windlass listing says almost everything you need in its title: series, motor power, vertical or horizontal, voltage, whether it is gypsy only or gypsy plus drum, and the chain size and standard the gypsy is cut for — for example V3 w/ Fast Fit 1000W Vertical Electric 12V Gypsy + Drum 10mm - ISO. This collection holds the complete windlasses, the V6 deck units, capstans, controls, gypsies and the spares to keep a fitted windlass turning. The boat-length bands below come from Lewmar's sizing chart for average-displacement boats; the Lewmar windlass guide has the full tables.

Lewmar Windlass Series in This Collection
  • VX1 and VX1L (12V, 300 to 800 W): the compact vertical range. VX1 comes in 300 W and 500 W, VX1L in 500 W and 800 W, gypsy only or with a drum, for 8 mm DIN 766 or 1/4" chain. Lewmar rates the VX1 300 W for about 20 to 30 ft and the VX1 500 W and VX1L for about 20 to 38 ft. See the VX1 300W and the VX1L 500W.
  • V700 (12V, 320 W): the smallest vertical, gypsy only for 6 mm DIN 766, for about 20 to 35 ft — the V700 320W.
  • VX2, VX2+ and VX3 (700 to 1500 W): VX2 is 700 W at 12V or 900 W at 24V, VX2+ is 1000 W at 12V and VX3 is 1500 W at 12V. Lewmar bands: VX2 about 24 to 40 ft, VX2+ 28 to 45 ft, VX3 35 to 50 ft. See the VX2+, the VX2 900W 24V and the VX3 1500W.
  • CPX1, CPX2 and CPX3: CPX1 is 700 W at 12V, CPX2 is 700 W at 12V or 24V and CPX3 is 1000 W at 12V or 24V, with chain from 6 to 10 mm. About 28 to 45 ft for CPX1 and CPX2 and 35 to 50 ft for CPX3. See the CPX1, the CPX2 and the CPX3.
  • V1, V2 and V3: V1 is 700 W at 12V, V2 with Fast Fit is 700 W at 12V or 900 W at 24V and V3 with Fast Fit is 1000 W at 12V or 24V. About 28 to 45 ft for V1 and V2 and 35 to 50 ft for V3. See the V1 and the V2 900W 24V.
  • V4 (1600 W at 12V, 2000 W at 24V): the first of the larger verticals, with gypsies from 8 to 12 mm in DIN 766 and ISO versions, rated for about 47 to 80 ft. See the V4 1600W 12V and the V4 2000W 24V.
  • V6 deck units: modular. The deck unit is right-hand or left-hand, gypsy only or gypsy plus drum, and the gypsy is sold separately to suit your chain (10, 12 or 14 mm, or 1/2" Acco). The motor gearbox is a separate item in 24V electric or hydraulic: V6 gypsy and drum deck unit, right hand, 24V motor gearbox and hydraulic motor gearbox.
  • H2 and H3 horizontal (12V and 24V): the whole windlass above deck. H2 is 700 W at 12V and H3 is 1000 W at 12V or 24V, both rated for about 35 to 50 ft. See the H2 700W and the H3 1000W.
  • Pro-Series, Pro-Sport and Pro-Fish free-fall: compact horizontal 12V units for small boats; Lewmar bands the Pro-Series and Pro-Fish 700 and 1000 at about 20 to 38 ft. See the Pro-Series 700.
  • Capstans and reel: the C3 1000W drum-only capstan in 12V and 24V, C4/5 and C4/8 capstan deck units, and the CRW400 reel.
Vertical or Horizontal
  • Vertical: the motor and gearbox sit below deck, the gypsy on deck, and the chain wraps about 180 degrees around the gypsy. Lewmar asks for a minimum fall of 18 in (457 mm) into the locker.
  • Horizontal: everything is above deck, with about 90 degrees of wrap and a minimum fall of 12 in (304 mm). It suits boats without access below the foredeck. The horizontal vs vertical guide compares them in detail.
12V or 24V

Match the windlass to your boat's electrical system. The rated normal current draw runs from about 20 A on the smallest Pro-Series to 125 A on the V4 1600 W at 12V, while the V4 2000 W at 24V is rated at 70 A. 24V models in this collection include the V2, V3, CPX2, CPX3, H3, VX2 900 W, V4 2000 W and the V6. Size the battery bank, breaker and cable to the model you choose.

Chain, Gypsy and Drum

The size and standard at the end of each title (6 mm, 7 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm or 1/4", with ISO, DIN 766 or BBB) is the chain the gypsy is cut for, so match it to your chain before you pick the windlass. "Gypsy Only" is for an all-chain rode; "Gypsy + Drum" adds a rope drum for a chain-and-rope rode. If the gypsy is the wrong size, you do not need a new windlass: gypsy kits are listed separately for the V1/2/3 (000 to 003 and 006), V4/V5 (201 to 204), CPX, Pro Series and V6 ranges. The gypsy guide shows how to measure a link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Lewmar windlass fits a 40 ft boat?
On Lewmar's sizing chart, a 40 ft boat of average displacement sits in the bands of the VX2, VX2+, VX3, CPX1 to CPX3, V1 to V3, H2 and H3. If the boat is heavy or has high windage, or you sit between two sizes, take the larger one. The windlass sizing guide explains how to weigh ground tackle.

What does "Gypsy Only" mean compared with "Gypsy + Drum"?
Gypsy only handles chain. Gypsy plus drum adds a rope drum above the gypsy so the same windlass can haul a rode that is rope with chain near the anchor.

What do ISO, DIN 766 and BBB mean in the title?
They name the chain standard the gypsy is cut for, next to its size. Match them to your chain, or measure a link as shown in the gypsy guide, before you order.

Should I choose 12V or 24V?
Choose the voltage your boat already runs. A 24V windlass draws fewer amps for the same work, which helps over long cable runs, but needs a 24V system. Models such as the VX1 and VX3 are 12V only.

Can I replace just the motor or the gypsy?
Yes. Motor gearboxes and gypsy kits are listed individually for most Lewmar windlass series, so a worn motor or the wrong gypsy does not mean a new windlass. Check the series and model on the windlass before you order.
