Facnor Headsail Furlers — Halyard Angle & Furling Line Recommendations

Halyard Angle Recommendations

  • Halyard angle with the forestay: between 15 and 25°.
  • A = mini 50 mm and maxi 80 mm between the halyard deflector wheel and the bottom end of the forestay terminal.
  • B = 78 mm.
  • C = 80 mm max. between the halyard swivel and the top car, after sail stretching; the distance between halyard swivel and top car must never exceed 150mm.
  • The halyard deflector wheel stops the halyard wrapping round the forestay and also deflects the spinnaker halyard: maintain it to protect the forestay.
  • These average values vary with the mast geometry; Facnor strongly recommends having the furler installed by a skilled professional.

Halyard Spectacles

If the halyard/forestay angle is too narrow (less than 15°), add a universal Sparcraft spi spectacle to open the angle and stop the halyard wrapping round the forestay.

Sparcraft spi spectacle model ØA int. (mm) Rope Ø (mm)
Small size (with 4 rivets) Ø 12 Ø 5 to Ø 10
Middle size (with 4 rivets) Ø 17,6 Ø 12 to 16
Large size (with 4 rivets) Ø 22 Ø 18 to Ø 22

Furling Line & Halyard Tension

  • Whatever the model (LS, LX, RX or FD), the furling line must run at 90° to the forestay.
  • LS-LX-RX models: the furling line must run through one stainless steel guide.
  • The halyard can be eased downwind or in light winds (and tightened in the opposite case) to improve performance.
  • After sailing, slack the halyard to relieve the sail, the mast sheaves and above all the halyard swivel; tension it again before sailing.
