Hydraulic Data

Model Max. pressure delivered by the power unit Connection on the motorised unit Max. revolution speed Flow rate of the power unit
HF550-600 140 bars Male JIC 9/16 30 rpm 20 L/mn max intermittent

The table also prints 15 L/mn and 16 L/mn under the speed and flow headings (as printed); the text gives 16 L/mn as the recommended continuous flow.

  • Kit in 2 or 3 parcels: box (motorised drive unit, bottom fitting / link plates or tube + toggle + pins, bearings and screws) and 1 or 2 tubes (telescopic section, twin-groove foil sections, connectors).
  • Option: handless line crank for use in case of hydraulic failure (part no. 03039000100).

Precautions

  • The aluminium foils are highly conductive: never bring the furler near electric cables or high-tension lines, and do not install it when stormy weather is forecast.
  • Secure the mast before removing the forestay bottom pin: support it with a spinnaker or genoa halyard – lashed, not on a snap shackle or shackle.
  • No mast unstepping, no section cutting and no drilling are needed thanks to the telescopic section. Replace the forestay if it is too old.
  • Maintenance: rinse the furler with fresh water several times each season.
  • In use: check other halyards are clear before furling or unfurling, and secure the sheets once you have the sail area you need. Keep a spare sail on board (an old genoa with a luff tape to fit the Facnor groove).

Assembly Stages

  1. Halyard deflector: slip the disk round the forestay, screw up; assemble the two half bearings above it, female part up; fit the bearing into the deflector and tighten screw F.
  2. Top cap: slip on the stainless steel plate, then the top cap, and lock the plate into the cap notches. Assemble two bearings (male part up), give the bottom one a quarter turn to join them, push them into the cap and give another quarter turn. Fit the top section into the cap (if it will not go, give the bearings a half turn) and tap in the 2 pins – not too hard.
  3. Halyard swivel: fit it the right way up, fix the two shackles, and tie a downhaul to it so you can recover it.
  4. Foil sections: fit a connector on every section except the top one, screws loose. For each joint, assemble a bearing round the forestay, slide the next section up so the connector pushes the bearing into the section above, fit both screws (G), then tighten the 4 screws (G+H). A 1 m section goes above the lowest 2 m section. Fix nothing to the bottom of the last section.
  5. Telescopic section: assemble a bearing round the forestay and slide the telescopic section up into the lowest foil section, the side with only one hole pointing down.
  6. Fit the sail feeder round the telescopic section and hold it with its screw; assemble a bearing (male side up) under the telescopic section and give it a quarter turn to lock it.
  7. Drum: hoist the motorised unit on another halyard; loosen screw P, lower the telescopic section and its bearing into the drum nose until the bearing seats, then tighten P.

Motorised unit bottom fitting

  • The manual shows the HF550/600 bottom fitting as an 8-step drawing: 4 screws (Q) on the link plates, top pin (R), bottom pin (S) on the deck chain plate, and 3 screws (T) at the base of the unit. Follow the drawing in the PDF.

Adjusting the sections

  • Tension the backstay slightly. Leave the feeder resting on the drum, raise all sections to touch the forestay top terminal, put a screw (do not tighten) in a lower hole of the last section and let the sections slide down until a hole meets the first thread of the telescopic section.
  • The sections must have descended at least 50 mm before the screw engages; otherwise go to the next hole, 100 mm below.
  • Leave at least 50 mm between the halyard deflector and the bottom of the forestay top terminal.
  • Ideal feeder position: 600 to 800 mm above the drum shackle. Align the holes and screw the feeder to the telescopic section.

Hydraulic Power Unit

  • If the hydraulic power unit has no pressure limiter, install one set to a maximum of 140 bars to avoid excess pressure in the motorised unit.
  • If the flow of the hydraulic unit is not clearly specified, install a flow limiter preventing a flow above 20 L/mn. Recommended continuous flow: 16 L/mn.
  • The motorised unit is normally irreversible: the supply circuit doesn't need to be locked when the furler is not rotating.
  • To use the safety square of the handle, you need a by-pass valve between the two hoses, or the distributor controlling the furler must be open-centre type.

Post-Installation Checks

  • Halyard deflector to bottom of the top forestay terminal: 50 mm minimum – 150 maximum.
  • Halyard swivel to top cap: 50 mm minimum – 100 mm maximum, after full stretch of the sail (space for the change in luff length).
  • Swivel clear of any halyard; genoa halyard correctly tensioned; forestay sufficiently tight.
  • Without the deflector wheel: fix a block on the mast so the halyard leaves at 15° to the forestay, top cap about 50 mm below the top forestay terminal (50–100 mm).
  • Shorter-luff sail (storm sail, working jib): rig a strop at the head so the swivel sits about 50 mm from the top cap when fully hoisted.
