Selden Self-Tacking System 22 — Owner's Manual

System 22 at a Glance

  • Universal retro-fit system for boats of about 25 to 35 feet; max working load 700 kg.
  • Legs cut to length; track and deck-fitting angles adjustable. Track from stock in two radiuses; custom single- or double-curved tracks to order (enquiry form 595-952-E).
  • The sail must be designed for a self-tacker and cannot overlap the mast. The deck must be solid, not sandwich, where fittings go; watch for hatches or vents just forward of the mast.
  • Complete system = track, car, consoles, deck fittings and sheet blocks; end stops have rubber shock absorbers. Coach-roof or side-deck mounting.

Sheet Arrangement

  • Over the foredeck (simplest, most common): clew → single block on the car → block at the bow → cockpit. Track angled 35° to horizontal; car/block load approx. sheet load x 1.75.
  • Up the mast: car → sheave box in the mast at 50% of the fore triangle → exit slot → mast-foot block → cockpit. Needs a 2:1 sheet and a single becket block on the car. Track angled 80°; load approx. sheet load x 1.5. Deck and steaming lights may need relocating.
  • Centre consoles: RM at 30° <15 kNm (jib sheet load approx. 250kg) – single console on the centreline; >15 kNm – double consoles symmetric about the centreline. Mount close to the mast/mast base to maximise jib foot length; the car needs clearance.

Track Length

Normally 8-10° sheeting angle works well; under 7° is not recommended – ask your sailmaker. L = 2 x Jt x A + l (A = tan(a), Jt = fore-triangle base to track, l = car length: single 442-148-01 = 85 mm, double 442-148-02 = 175 mm). Measure L in a straight line between the end marks on a curved track.

Sheet angle (a) A (tan(a))
7.0° 0.123
7.5° 0.132
8.0° 0.141
8.5° 0.150
9.0° 0.158
9.5° 0.167
10.0° 0.176
10.5° 0.185
11.0° 0.194

Assembly

Tools: hacksaw, file, Allen keys 2.5mm, 5mm and 6mm, 13mm socket, 10mm spanner, tape measure, pen, tape, drill with Ø6.2 bit, marine sealant. Deck fasteners are not included.

  1. Cut the track at the end marks, square to the radius. Slide joint bracket 442-201 in with no gap (file the track if needed).
  2. Drill two Ø6.2mm holes at each end through ONE wall only (442-201 can start the holes, then remove it). Never drill the upper track surface.
  3. Roll the car from its transport track onto the track – do not drop any balls; tape it in place.
  4. Fit 442-201 at both ends with screws, washers (one inside, one outside the profile) and rubber end stop, using locking adhesive.
  5. Fit bracket 442-200 to the joint bracket with screw and spherical washer – note the "AFT" marking inside.
  6. Fit the M8 threaded bars with washers and plain nuts, set the system on deck and lock bar positions and angles.
  7. Deck fitting kit: fit the end fittings, mark the bars 5mm above the nuts and cut. Foot kit: mark where the bars meet the deck.
  8. Cut the Ø25mm legs to L+23mm (hidden inside 442-200). Port and starboard pairs must match.
  9. Assemble on deck: track centred, ends symmetric to the forestay, correct angle; check access below deck.

Installation & Care

  1. Fix the centre bracket with 3xM6 screws (not supplied) and sealant; track centre mark on the centreline.
  2. Deck fitting kit: locking adhesive in end fitting 442-207, then legs, locking nuts and washers. Foot kit: legs on the brackets, tightened from below.
  3. Attach the side consoles, screws loose; adjust angle with the spherical washer.
  4. Deck fittings: 4xM6 countersunk screws each with sealant. Foot kit: drill through the deck in line with the bar angle.
  5. Deck fitting kit: clevis and split pins, tighten everything. Foot kit: sealant under each foot, foot, washer and nut from inside, cut off excess bar.
  6. Fit the covers (four screws).
  • Rinse regularly with fresh water, working the car along the track; keep the ball race clean.
  • Lubricate the car with Seldén high performance lubricant 312-534.
  • Annually check all screws: side-console nuts (open the lid), joint-bracket hex screw and the two screws on the back of the centre bracket.
