Sleipner S-Link Automatic Main Switch AMS-2 — Installation & User Manual

What the AMS-2 Does

Main Parts

  • Contactor: the high-current relay connecting the battery (B+ stud) to the load (THRUSTER+ stud).
  • Contactor coil: powered by a low-current supply (AMS SUPPLY / coil feed, red and black leads) through an external 5A fuse (not included); controlled by the AMS software and circuit board.
  • Red mushroom button: pulled out = remote control via S-Link; pressed in = manual override, contactor stays open whatever S-Link commands.
  • ANL fuse in the built-in holder, selected for the load's maximum current and the wire gauge (see the thruster manual).
  • Short S-Link spur cable to connect to the S-Link network – needed for remote operation.

Features

  • Remote control from anywhere on board through S-Link compatible Sleipner products (e.g. a joystick panel).
  • Detects a blown fuse at start-up and reports it on the S-Link panel; reports Manual Override mode too.
  • Temperature supervision: asks eVision thrusters and other ELS components to reduce power as it warms, and opens the contactor above the critical level; warnings appear on the panel.
  • B+/Thruster voltage 0-64 VDC; coil feed 12/24/48 V (absolute max. 64 VDC), adjusted automatically.

Considerations and Dimensions

  • Install the AMS as close to the battery bank as possible, in a location that stays dry at all times, with quick access to the shut-off button and short power cables.
  • Only connect it to compatible original Sleipner control panels or control devices.
  • Do NOT fit it in spaces requiring ignition protected equipment.
  • Use the correct fuse for the installed thruster model (see the thruster installation manual). This manual is used in addition to the thruster manual and is intended for professionals.
Code Description mm inch
H Height 194.3 7.6
L Length 205 8.1
W Width 79 3.11
+W Width including fasteners 90 3.54
(a) Attachment hole from the top 51.5 2.03
(b) Attachment hole from the bottom 92.8 3.65
(c) Attachment hole from the side 37.5 1.5
(d) Distance between attachment holes 121.8 4.8
(e) Attachment hole from the side 45.7 1.8

Mounting, Fuse and Cables

  1. Remove the cover screws and cover; secure the AMS with the two mounting holes on each side.
  2. Remove the nuts and washers, install the fuse (type and rating per the thruster installation manual).
  3. Assemble washers, battery cable(s), end washer and nuts; tighten to 20 Nm (14.5 lb/ft). The bolts are brass: excessive torque damages the threads.
  4. Fit the thruster cable(s) the same way and tighten to the recommended torque.
  5. Manual override: pulled out = remote controlled ON/OFF (default); pushed in = OFF. Leave it OFF when leaving the boat for long periods or when installing or servicing the thruster system.

Do NOT use washers between lugs: it can cause overheating and a thermal event. Spring washers go in the outer position before tightening the nut. For dual cables, leave one washer on each bolt as shown in the PDF.

  • Wiring (unit only): battery + to the ANL fuse/B+ side, THRUSTER+ to the thruster system, coil feed 12/24/48V through the 5A fuse with an optional on/off switch, S-Link spur to the backbone. See the thruster system manual for the complete diagram.

Service and Troubleshooting

  • Keep the equipment clean and dry.
  • Check all cable and other connections are tight, without signs of excessive heat or corrosion.
Panel message Action
Manual override The override button has been pushed: pull it to activate
Fuse is blown Replace the fuse, or check the main cables to battery and thruster
Communication fail Panel has lost contact with the AMS: check S-Link and/or power connections
Power failure AMS has no power: check the 5A fuse, the power connection and power on the red and black wire
Overtemperature High internal temperature from excessive current: the contactor stays open until it cools below the threshold – wait for the AMS to cool
