Sleipner Control Panels 8950G, 8955G, 8960, 8965, 8940, 8909C — Installation & User Manual

Using the Panel

  1. Turn on the thruster main power switch (always off when you leave the boat).
  2. Press both ON buttons together to activate the panel; OFF deactivates it.
  3. Push the starboard/port button, or move the joystick, in the direction you want the bow (or stern) to go. 8940 and 8909C have separate bow and stern joysticks.
  4. Release shortly before the boat reaches position – she keeps drifting.

Smart Shut-Off: the panels switch off automatically after approximately 6 minutes of inactivity.

Before You Fit

  • These panels only work with Side-Power thrusters that have a built-in electronic control box and a 4/5 lead control cable system.
  • The display area is waterproof when correctly installed; never submerge the whole panel.
  • Conflicting commands from two panels stop the thruster. Forward or reverse speed must not exceed 4 knots; above +1-2 kn a side thruster has little steering effect.

Fitting

  1. Choose a flat, easy-to-reach spot that does not obstruct other devices.
  2. Cut the hole with the supplied cut-out template; seal a chipped edge to help the gasket.
  3. Fit the gasket to the back of the panel and plug in the cables.
  4. Fasten the screws and fit the cover caps.

Wiring

  • With an Automatic Main Switch: 6 1278-xxM 5-lead control cables and 6 1265 5-lead Y-connectors (the diagram shows 5A fuses at the AMS and a 10A fuse in the control feed).
  • With a manual main switch: 6 1277-xxM 4-lead control cables and 6 1274 4-lead Y-connectors.
  • A common negative MUST be wired with 8940 and 8909C when bow and stern thrusters run from separate battery banks; have an electrician size the negative cable and fuse.
  • With the main switch off, check with an ohm meter that there is no connection between the electro motor body and the positive terminal, or the negative (A1) terminal.

8902C Joystick Panel Replacement Kit

  • 8902 C = joystick panel 8940 with adapter plate, used to replace older dual-joystick panels (8940 X Exturn, 8940 H non shut-down, 8940 Y Yacht, 8940 S black, 8940 G grey) in their existing cut-out.
  • The 8940 has a 5-wire control loom; the yellow wire is only used with a Side-Power Automatic Main Switch.
  • Position the adapter plate over the existing cut-out with the drain grooves facing down, check the 4 outer holes clear the dashboard for the panel screws (widen if needed), and fix it with the 4 M3 screws and retaining brackets.
  • File the original opening as needed for the 8940, then install the panel as per its guide; do not over-tighten the panel screws.
  • Use sealing compound behind the adapter plate where it is open to the weather (flybridge, open single-station yachts).
