System Overview & Safety

  • Covers DC models (24/48V) SPS40E, SPS50E, SPS60E and AC models SPS60E, SPS70E, SPS80E, SPS100E, SPS110E, SPS120E.
  • Two (or four) movable fins on shaft and actuator assemblies through each side of the hull, driven DC or AC depending on actuator size, gyro-controlled over the Sleipner S-Link (CANbus) network. They reduce roll underway and at anchor.
  • Keep the system engaged whenever the boat runs planing or semi-planing, even in calm water: the fins are part of the directional and roll stability at speed, and fins left fixed can make the boat heel and handle unpredictably.
  • If the system fails: reduce speed to where the boat's natural stability copes. If the fins do not lock in reverse (sensor or other fault), reverse only at minimal speed.
  • Never run the stabilizers with anyone or anything in or near the water; check clearance from docks, mooring lines and submerged objects – fins may extend beyond the hull sides.

Operation

  1. From the Home screen select STABILIZERS.
  2. Cruising Mode: press the Stabilizer ON/OFF button. The button turns blue (a green ring in the other user manual edition), the fin lock symbols disappear. Typically used from 3–4 knots; below that the fins centre and lock, and operation resumes as speed increases.
  3. At Anchor Mode: press the Anchor button (0–4 knots). With both modes active the system switches automatically with speed; with At Anchor off it turns off below 3 knots.
  4. To stop: press ON/OFF – the fins centre and lock. The system can also be switched from a PJC-2xx panel.
  • Backing: in reverse the fins centre and lock automatically and BACKING shows (a warning state); afterwards the system resumes or turns off according to the Suspend Exit State setting.
  • Disabled fins show on the front screen (SCU fault or switched off manually). Disable a fin to reduce forward forces, when at anchor without room, alongside a quay or another boat, or with swimmers near the fin.

Stabilizer Modes & Gain

Mode / setting What it does
Gain Limits fin acceleration, separately for cruising and at anchor. Higher is not necessarily better: tune it to the conditions.
Eco mode Limits fin activity to essential corrections for moderate seas and fuel-efficient cruising; max fin angular velocity is reduced to 50-95%, and so is roll reduction.
Park mode Alternative locked fin position so the fins do not protrude beyond the boat's envelope; needs manual confirmation to move. Angle set per fin, positive clockwise (e.g. 5° inwards = 5° starboard, -5° port).
Fishing mode Protects the fins in reverse: limited movement at low reverse speed, free-floating above that, then recentre and lock. Works even with the system off; speed limits are preset.
Dynamic positioning Lets the system keep working with reverse engaged when it senses reverse is used to hold position rather than move astern.
Docking mode Limits outboard fin travel so the fins stay inside the boat's envelope when running in a confined berth. Sector set per fin in the setup menu (e.g. 5° outboard = -5° starboard, +5° port) and activated per fin by touching the fin symbol.

Alarms, Warnings & Updates

  • Alarms (red) are serious, immediate issues; warnings (yellow) are developing issues or normal states such as Backing, Reduced Power Mode, High Temperature Derate or Low Voltage Derate. They can coexist: always read the list.
  • Fix the cause before pressing Clear All Alarms; clearing without fixing does not remove the warning. Each alarm has a description and a QR code; Sleipner's Fault Code Navigator gives fault descriptions and guidance.
  • Fault history: Home → S-Link Devices → device → Fault History. Logging and Remote Control (PIN shown on the panel, network enabled) only when requested by Sleipner.
Warning Prevents system start
DC undervoltage Yes
GPS missing Yes
High speed system off No
Park mode No
Eco mode/reduced power No
Backing No
  • S-Link device updates: by USB (S-Link Programmer → Tools → Download Manager → S-Link Offline Upgrade, to a good FAT32 USB stick in the port on the back of the panel) or over Wi-Fi/Ethernet from S-Link Devices → Upgrade. Updating from the TP-43A panel needs panel software V1.105 or newer.
  • A communication failure during an upgrade forces the device into boot mode: repair the S-Link fault and retry. Turn Wi-Fi off after downloading, before resuming operation.

Maintenance Intervals

Task Service level Interval
Inspect electrical connections 1W 2000h or 12/every (months/year)
Change oil of gear unit 2D 4000h, when out of water, or 36/third
Change gear transmission parts 3W 8000h
Change seals 3D 8000h, when out of water
Check oil magnet (fin must be removed) 2D When out of water, when required
Clean fins and paint with antifouling 2D When out of water, when required

Service level: 1 = onboard, at sea; 2 = shore supported; 3 = trained personnel. D = vessel out of the water, W = vessel can be in the water. Whichever comes first, hours or time; skipping the schedule voids the warranty on the affected items.

  • New installations or after major component replacement: inspect after the first 100 hours or first week – "shake" the fins from outside to check for play.
  • Main shaft bearing life cannot be predicted: check bearing clearances periodically and inspect and clean the fins at every haul-out.

Gear Oil & Oil Inspection

Oil

Model Oil capacity
SPS40E DC 0.9L
SPS50E DC 1.1L
SPS60E AC/DC 1.7L
SPS70E AC/DC 2.55L
SPS80E 4.3L
SPS100E 8.7L
SPS110E 18.5L
SPS120E 18.5L
  • Industrial gear oil (EP – extreme pressure), viscosity class ISO VG 68; equivalent ISO VG 68 EP oils may be used.
  • Recommended: Klüber Syntheso D 68 EP, Mobil Mobilgear 600 XP 68, Castrol Optigear BM 68, Shell Omala S2 G 68.

Inspection

  1. Drain the oil into a clear container (drain and refill plugs take a 5mm hex key).
  2. Check the amount drained.
  3. Inspect it: clear = normal; white = possible water contamination; cloudy or dirty = contamination or wear – then replace the magnetic drain plug under the fin flange.
