* Thrust equivalent: kgf x 1.4 due to positional advantages. Diameter 16,5 x 16,5 cm for all models. S = Single, C = Compact (transom mount), D = Dual. Sailboats and displacement hulls 6 – 15 m: EX Single (bow and/or stern) or EX Compact on the transom; 14 – 20 m: EX Dual.

Where to Mount It

Position

  • Exactly on the boat's centre line: stretch a cord from the keel to the bow or stern and slide the position fore and aft along it.
  • As far down and forward (bow) or aft (stern) as possible, though 30 cm under the waterline is sufficient.
  • The 50 - 51 mm hull hole must not land on a bulkhead; the 80 mm wide metal sheet needs the hole at least 60 mm from the next bulkhead. Measure inside the boat too.
  • After mounting, stick the crane operator reference stickers on both sides of the hull – lifting straps must never touch the thruster.

Restrictions

  • Bow mounting on high speed or planing boats is not recommended (spray); if done, the bottom edge must be clearly above the planing line.
  • Never on the planing surface as a stern thruster; GRP boats from 12 knots: hull construction must comply with the GL guidelines.
  • Thrust water flow must not be obstructed (e.g. by the rudder blade), and the flow to rudder and drive must not be affected.
  • Never two EX side by side on one axis – the propeller needs free sight to port and starboard.
  • Mounting kit Basic: round chine bow/stern, bathing platform, vertical transom. Kit Adapter: round and hard chine bow/stern, bathing platform.

Drilling, Sealing and Bolting

Main Hole & Seals

  • Drill the hollow-shaft hole 50 - 51mm with a hand-held drill; mounting bolt holes 18 mm.
  • Seals compress about 25% when tightened: total sealing height = hull thickness x 1,25 (30mm hull → 37,5 mm; the manual also prints 40 mm in its first example).
  • Coat the underside of the metal sheet with sealant (e.g. Sikaflex) and let it take the hull shape as the nuts are tightened; press the thruster from outside so the seals are not squeezed out.
  • Steel or aluminium hulls: always use the isolator instead of the metal sheet, isolate welded mounting bolts with rubber, and check with a multimeter that thruster and hull have no direct connection.
  • Adapter on a round chine: mountable within one hour; hard chine within five hours (without electrical installation). Fill any gap with sealant; keep the GRP adapter away from fuel, oil, grease and solvents.
  • EX Compact mounts vertically on the transom with the boardlocks 250 and the black plastic spacer; EX Dual is fitted like two Singles, with the hole centre distance exactly per the dimension sheet and an in-plane mounting surface.

  • * Wire length is the sum of + and - wire. ** Sized for a runtime of 10 minutes without recharging.
  • Use one or more separate starter batteries (not consumer batteries) of matching type and capacity, close to the thruster. A 24 V model on a 12 V boat: two 12 V batteries in series.
  • Fit a main switch and fuse in the positive lead; the main switch easy to reach and off whenever the thruster is not in use.
  • The thruster cable is 0,75 m: mount the i-BOX (102250-12V / 102250-24V) close to it, dry, cable entries facing down. One i-BOX cannot run two EX independently; bow and stern each need their own.
  • Thruster runs the wrong way: swap the blue and grey wires on the contactor in the i-BOX (or at the panel).
  • Current EX with i-BOX are plug and play with Side-Power thrusters and panels; older EX with E-BOX need upgrading to an i-BOX and current control cables/panels.

Panel cut-out: Ø 51,8 mm / 2" (template in the PDF). Any number of panels can be added with Y-connectors; opposing commands stop the thruster until only one direction is requested.

Operation and Maintenance

Operating

  1. Switch on the EX main switch.
  2. Turn the panel on by pressing both "ON" buttons together (it shuts off after 6 minutes of inactivity).
  3. Move the joystick or press the key for the direction you want; stop a little early – the boat keeps moving.
  4. Always turn off the main switch when leaving the boat.
  • Never run it for more than 5 seconds out of the water, or out of the water with people nearby; let the propeller stop before changing direction in air.
  • Continuous runtime approx. 3 minutes depending on water temperature, then the overheat protection stops it until it cools.
  • No start: main switch, panel LED, main fuse, motor overheat. Weak: battery charge, corroded connections, minimum voltage 10 V or 21 V not reached, propeller blocked.

Maintenance

  • Antifoul with an aluminium primer and copper-free antifouling. High-pressure cleaning is fine (except plastic parts by hand).
  • Check the anode at least once a year; change it every season or when half gone, with sealant on the screw.
  • Anode: the manual lists 140295 as "kit w/ anode and screw" and 4 1190 as "anode" in one place, and the reverse in another (as printed).
  • Propeller: EX 25C/40C/35S/55S/110D → article 50320; EX 55C/70C/75S/95S/180D → article 50321. Fill the space between the plastic disk and the housing seal completely with propeller grease (not between disk and propeller, never on the thread). Main switch off.

Anode Replacement and Retrofit (EXturn)

  • Clean galvanic corrosion out of the threaded hole for good electrical contact (do not drill through the bottom).
  • Thread glue (LocTite 2701 or similar) on the middle section of the bolt only – keep the ends clean for electrical contact.
  • Retrofitting older EXturn without anode protection: on the centre line at the marked position, drill ø6.8 10mm deep and tap M8x1.25 to the bottom; fit the M8 stud with Locktite from 5mm above the bottom upwards and tighten to 24Nm; fit the anode with the M8 lock nut to 20Nm.
