Sleipner External Signal Interface ESI-1 — Installation & User Manual

What It Does

  • External Signal Interface to the S-Link bus with two 4-20mA analogue inputs that control bow (AI1) and stern (AI2) thrusters proportionally.
  • Operates all E, SEP, SH and SAC series thrusters, including retractable thrusters and the Automatic Main Switch; typically used with autopilots with 4-20mA outputs and third-party control systems.
  • 12mA = centre, thruster stopped (dead band 11.6mA to 12.4mA); 4mA = 100% port (from 4.4mA), 20mA = 100% starboard (from 19.6mA).
  • DI1 (12V or 24V) enables AI1/AI2 and closes relay RO1 as activation feedback. RO2 is run-enable feedback for hydraulic thrusters with PHC controllers and opens on PHC emergency feedback.

Settings

  • DIP switches 3 and 4 set the operation mode and must be OFF.
  • DIP switch 1 OFF (default): any other device sending thrust overrides the ESI-1, which resumes 3 seconds after the last command. ON: same priority as other devices; the controller outputs the highest thrust and stops on conflicting directions.
  • DI1 functionality (S-Link Programmer): Always ON (default) or Pulse Activation – a pulse of minimum 100ms toggles activation; it deactivates after 60 minutes with inputs centred at 12mA (or one centred and one out of range).
  • Priority Mode 0 (default): same S-Link priority as all devices. Mode 1: ESI-1 is deactivated whenever a PJC panel is active (PJC2xx panels need the ESI-1 Priority Mode 1 upgrade).
  • Green status LED: continuous = power and S-Link OK; flashing = power OK, no S-Link communication.

Screw the unit to a solid surface. Power it externally (8-31V DC) through a 5A breaker/fuse, and connect it to S-Link for the thruster controllers. DI1 needs a signal ground on the DI_GND terminal.

Connection Summary

Terminal Use
+24V / 0V Supply via 5A breaker/fuse
DI1 / DI_GND Thrust enable (12V or 24V)
AI1+ / AI1- Bow thrust 4-20mA (loop supply from the source)
AI2+ / AI2- Stern thrust 4-20mA (loop supply from the source)
RO1A / RO1C Thrust enable feedback
RO2A / RO2C Run enable feedback (hydraulic)
S-Link Power cable #6 1328, terminator #6 1327 on the backbone
  • S-Link is CAN-based: BACKBONE cables (blue connectors) carry power and data, one SPUR cable (green connectors) per connected unit, T-connectors or 4-port T-connectors to join them, BACKBONE Extenders to lengthen.
  • One POWER cable per system, ideally mid-backbone, with a 2A fuse: yellow and black to GND, red to +12VDC or +24VDC.
  • An END Terminator at each end of the backbone. Spare spurs may stay unterminated but protect the open connectors from water.
  • Avoid sharp bends, close the connector locks fully, keep cables out of standing water and away from radio transmitters, antennas and high-voltage cables.
  • Only original Sleipner S-Link products or approved Sleipner interfaces on the bus; with third-party control at least one original Sleipner panel must be installed.
