Sleipner Galvanic Isolation Kits for Steel/Aluminium Tunnels — Installation Instructions

What Each Range Needs

Range / tunnel Guidance
SE25 – SE60 / Ø110mm – Ø185mm Composite brackets and composite flex coupler act as insulators: no risk of B+ connection to an aluminium hull, no extra bracket gasket needed. Stainless gearleg bolts must be insulated from the aluminium tunnel with a sleeve or equal. (SE25 and SE50 already galvanically isolated; SE30-40-60 isolated during 2017.)
SE80 – SE/SH300 / Ø185mm – Ø300mm Insulated aluminium bracket, pre-filled with oil. Coat the aluminium tunnel with epoxy primer, insulate stainless gearleg bolts with sleeves, and fit an extra gasket between bracket and tunnel – aluminium brackets carry a risk of B+ connection to the hull.
SH350 – SH1400 / Ø300mm – Ø610mm Gearlegs with gear oil change. Epoxy primer on the aluminium tunnel, insulated gearleg bolts, and an extra bracket gasket (standard on some models).

Installing an Isolation Kit

  1. Use the standard drilling template or gasket to mark the hole centres on the tunnel.
  2. Drill the holes to the measurements on the relevant isolation kit drawing in the PDF (each drawing includes a drilling template; diameters must be adjusted at the tunnel).
  3. Place the isolator parts and fasten gearleg and bracket per the thruster installation manual.
  4. IMPORTANT: where a kit includes a gasket, always place it between the tunnel and the motor bracket.

Galvanic Isolation Plate – Ø385 mm Tunnel Thrusters

  1. Clean the bracket and motor surfaces; turn off all electrical/hydraulic power first.
  2. Fit the isolation plate kit in the order shown: galvanic isolation plate on the bracket, bushings, washers, bolts and nuts (bolts with Veidec Multi Lock 143 or similar medium thread locker). Align the holding keys and grease the shafts with seawater resistant grease before fitting the flexible coupling.
  3. Set both spline gear shafts at the same distance (X = Y) and tighten both set screws.
  4. Place the motor on the bracket, engaging the couplings top and bottom (any orientation, but keep the hose terminals accessible), and fasten to 33 Nm (24 lb/ft).
  5. Check the drive shafts engage by turning the propeller by hand (it can be stiff through the gear reduction, but must turn).

Keep the hydraulic motor covered so dust cannot enter the hose ports. If the sleeves are too tight, the holes in the hydraulic motor must be drilled up to Ø14mm (seen on BA60 and BA40 motors).
