Installation of the Sleipner HPC (Hybrid Power Central) system: HPC-G PTO generator fitting, HPC-C central panel and HPC-S switch modules, power and signal connections, first system setup and the liquid cooling circuit for the generators.

What the HPC System Is
- The HPC system ties HPCG generators, battery banks and loads (bow and stern thrusters, optional stabilizers) into one power management framework, controlled over S-Link.
- Main modules: HPC-C (central control panel with busbars and fuses), HPC-S (switch module, one per channel, mounted close to the battery bank), HPC-G (DC PTO generator, port and starboard).
- Each delivered system is unique: the detailed specification and setup are in the delivery documentation that comes with it.
- The installation must have a way to disconnect the main battery outside the HPC, for example an easy-to-remove battery fuse and/or a separate disconnect switch.
Never run a thruster out of the water, and never rest a thruster motor on its drive shaft. DC motors produce some carbon dust and can exceed 100°C before the temperature switch trips: keep loose items and storage away from the motor.
Generator (HPC-G) on the Gearbox
- Remove the cover from the output side of the gearbox.
- Check the O-ring is in place on the motor flange and the bushing is in the centre of the gearbox output shaft.
- Apply Loctite 242 or similar on the four stud bolts and enter the shortest threaded end into the gearbox flange, until the plain section bottoms out.
- Enter the generator shaft in the bushing and push the generator fully home until the flanges meet.
- Fit the 4 washers and nuts with Loctite 242 or similar and tighten to 55Nm.
HPC-C Panel and HPC-S Switch
- HPC-C mounting holes are 6 mm diameter; choose screws to suit the surface. Drill from the panel drawing (HPC-3, HPC-4 and HPC-5 layouts are shown in the PDF), hang the panel on the upper screws, then fit the bottom screws and tighten all.
- Power cables: wire terminal, flat washer, lock washer, nut – in that order. Two cables can be fitted back to back on one connector if current requires. Battery positive to the upper busbar, negative to the lower busbar, near the centre of each busbar. Torque 22Nm.
- Fuses: use the specified fuse types only; one fuse stud can be moved to suit several fuse types; with ANL fuses fit the square washer. Torque 22Nm. Support all power cables so minimal load is applied to busbars and fuses.
- Generators normally go on the outer end channels, thrusters and fin actuators on the middle channels (follow the electrical schematic).
- HPC-S: mount close to the local battery bank (the module itself is the drilling template), battery cable to the upper bolt, load/thruster cable to the bottom bolt, then S-Link (X1) and fused 24V, 5A supply (X2; external 5A fuse needed).
- Optional HPC-S voltage measurement (X4) lets the HPC-S read battery voltage near the load to compensate for cable losses and detect a blown fuse.
HPC-C Connections
Basic connections (all setups)
| Connector | Use |
|---|---|
| X6 | Ship's 24V, 15A DC supply (screw terminal; observe polarity marked on the cover). Nominal 24 VDC, max. 31VDC (8-31V) |
| X7 | Factory-fitted lead to busbar positive and negative for DC-bus voltage measurement (0-64 VDC input, very low current) |
| S-Link | Standard Sleipner S-Link spur cable |
| F1, F2 | Fuses – press into the holder unless already fitted |
Typical and optional connections
| Connector | Use |
|---|---|
| X1 | Seawater pump relay in the external relay box (high side driver, max 2A) |
| X2, X3, X4 | General purpose high side driver outputs (max 2A per channel or max 6A total) |
| X29, X30, X11 | Up to three external battery temperature sensors for AGM systems – at least one per battery string |
| X17, X21 | One or two HPC-G coolant circulation pumps (extra wiring to X5 and X8 required – see the installation-specific harness) |
| X12 | Optional coolant loop temperature sensor |
| X9 | Optional coolant level sensor in the expansion tank |
| X28 | Optional external shutdown button, type NC+NC (remove the factory bridge cables first) |
| X13 / X14 | Isolated CAN-bus to a Li-Ion battery BMS / to an inverter or charger, if so configured |
| X15, X16 | Non-isolated CAN-bus with power supply for an optional external CAN device (daisy-chained IN/OUT) |
| X18, X19, X20 / X22 / X24-X27 | Relay outputs / Ethernet / general purpose logic inputs for future use |
| X23 | Four signal ground connections for optional sensors |
Signal connectors are push-in: a ferrule crimp tool is highly recommended. Secure wires inside the HPC-C with small tie wraps on the fastening points of the aluminium sheet.
First System Setup
Have the battery data at hand: total capacity (Ah), nominal voltage (V), chemistry (e.g. AGM), max. continuous discharge and charge C-rate, max. charge voltage and, for AGM and flooded lead, max. float voltage.
- Open Config → Hybrid Power Central → Setup.
- Check the displayed battery parameters match the installed hardware and press "Start".
- The system self-checks its components; "Setup Complete" appears when no failure is found.
- A failure is shown as a yellow dot on the part of the system concerned: troubleshoot and resolve it.
- Press "Retest"; when OK, "Setup complete" appears.
Battery, charging (current, voltage, time) and thruster priority values are factory-set to the purchase order under Config → Hybrid Power Central → Settings. Change them only if the installation differs from the original order.
Generator Cooling Circuit
- HPC-C is passively air cooled; HPC-S and HPC-B have internal fans that start only when needed at high current.
- The HPC-G generators are liquid cooled by a closed coolant circuit with one or two circulation pumps and a heat exchanger, so seawater never enters the generator circuit. The HPC-C switches the seawater pump on and off through the external relay box.
- Coolant: ethylene glycol-based long-life engine coolant for aluminium/mixed-metal systems to ASTM D3306 (OAT or HOAT), typically pink. Mix 50/50 v/v with deionized/demineralized water, or approved premixed 50/50 (do not dilute). No tap or sea water; never mix coolant chemistries or brands.
- Mount the coolant reservoir at the highest point of the circuit (expansion tank ~1m above the highest point), the coolant circulation pump at the lowest point, and always use the lower generator port as inlet and the higher as outlet.
- Relay box: fused 24 VDC, 45A supply. Seawater pump and strainer below the water line (strainer and cock valve not supplied); 30 lpm sea water. Route sea water lines to rise continuously from intake to discharge so they self-purge.
- Fill through the expansion tank, run the circulation pump with the manual override and keep topping up until no more air bubbles appear; stop at once if anything leaks.
