Sleipner Hydraulic Systems (HS) for Thrusters and Stabilisers — Installation & User Manual

System and Tank Data

A Sleipner hydraulic thruster/stabilizer system has one or more hydraulic pumps, one or two thrusters and an oil tank with pre-fitted load sense control valve, oil cooler, high-pressure and return filters, filler/breather filter and level/temperature indicators, plus internal hoses only. Valves and pumps are pre-adjusted at the factory; each system is calculated individually, so hose sizes come from the system drawings supplied with it.

  • Ports (floor and bulkhead tanks): pump to filter/valve 1" BSP, tank to pump 2" BSP, valve ports to users 1/2" BSP, water to/from oil cooler 3/4" nipple, bleed returns (3x) 1/2" BSP.
  • Leave 300mm for replacing filter elements. Rack mounted and standalone powerpack dimensions are in the installation manual.

Pump and Tank

  • Three ways to drive the pump: PTO on gearbox or engine (easiest and most reliable; standard SAE-B 2 bolt 13 teeth, SAE-C 4 bolt 14 teeth or SAE-CC 4 bolt 17 teeth), front mounted on the crankshaft with bracket and flexible coupling (the pump must move with the engine), or an AC power pack (soft start/VFD may be needed). Belt drive is not recommended.
  • Check the power source drive direction matches pump rotation (PTO pump nameplate L=CCW, R=CW). Never run the power source before the pump is pre-filled with oil.
  • Place the tank so the oil level is above the pump (gravity feed), with access to filters and filler; secure it and bond it to the boat's bonding system.
  • Keep all hydraulic parts away until grinding and drilling is finished; assemble in a very clean environment.

Hoses

  • Hoses and fittings by trained professionals only; clean every hose internally (jet pellets or flushing) before fitting.
  • No plumbing tape, hemp or excess thread sealant – it contaminates the oil.
  • LS hose from the valve «LS» port to the pump «X» port. Too long/deep threads (e.g. JIC) jam the pump pressure regulator spring.
  • Drain hose to the highest of pump ports L1/L2, back to one of the three 1/2" BSP tank drains.
  • Suction: reinforced non-collapsing hose, 2-2½" SAE 3000 PSI at the pump inlet; avoid sharp 90° elbows or T-pieces near the pump. Pressure: 1-1¼" SAE 6000 PSI from pump outlet to the free 1" BSP port on the high-pressure filter.

Seawater Cooling

  • Internal oil coolers are CuNi 90/10 coils needing approx. 15 l/min seawater, max. 17 l/min (more flow damages them over time). External coolers take 30 l/m or more depending on model.
  • The Sleipner centrifugal seawater pump gives approx. 30 l/m. It is not self-priming: mount it below the water line, rotor axis horizontal, feet down, pressure port up, close to the intake, with hoses rising continuously from through-hull to pump and from pump to discharge. Do not discharge into the engine exhaust; do not take cooling water from the main engines. Use a forward-facing scoop intake.
  • Do not mount the motor under the cooling pump (condensation). Bond the pump. Route the 10mm condense/drain tube to the bilge.
  • Cooling pump starts at 50 degrees C oil temperature; oil temperature alarm at 75 degrees C.
  • Priming before sea trial, start-up or after the boat has been out of the water: open the intake ball valve, loosen the bleed bolt until water flows, then retighten – 5Nm on hydraulic/ECI DC pumps (fibre washer), 12Nm on DC pumps (copper washer).

Fill-up and Start-up

  • Prime the pump(s) through the upper drain port before filling the tank.
  • Fill through the filler/breather with a filter trolley (10 micron). New mineral hydraulic oil ISO VG46 only (ISO 11158 Class HV / DIN 51524 Part 3 Class HVLP); ISO VG32 on systems without stabilizers operating in Arctic conditions.
  • Oil level approx. 3/4 full, or the middle of the upper sight glass indicator – no higher. Running pumps without oil is not covered by warranty.
  1. Secure the vessel, disconnect all electrical plugs from the valve block and centre the manual levers.
  2. Start the engine(s)/pump(s) at idle: standby pressure at the valve gauge should be 18-22 bar. No pressure means the pump probably turns the wrong way – stop immediately. If OK, run approx. 30 sec, stop, check oil level and leaks.
  3. Restart and run each thruster at approx. 30% both ways with the manual lever until air is purged; recheck oil and leaks.
  4. Run each consumer separately at full power and check pressures against the system manual and the filter indicators.
  5. Reconnect the valve plugs. Standby pressure must stay below 40 bar; oil temperature should not exceed 60° C (over 90° C can seriously damage components).

Servicing

  • Check filter dirt indicators (A and G) and oil level periodically; a large consumer must run at full speed for the dirt gauges to read.
  • Replace oil and filters after the initial start-up and test period, then every 2000 engine hours / every 3 year – sooner if the oil is discoloured or smells.
  • Once a year drain a little oil from the tank drain plug to remove sediment and water, and check hoses and fittings for wear and leaks (more often on commercial vessels).
  • High pressure filter: unscrew the bowl (B). Return filter: open the top cover (H) and retighten the three bolts. Use clean tools and catch the spill.
  • Cooling, on the water: every 2nd week set the cooling pump to "Always on" in the thruster control panel with intake valves open (engines running for hydraulic cooling pumps) and run it 5 minutes.
  • Cooling, on land for more than two weeks or in frost: blow the seawater side through with compressed air and remove the cooler and cooling pump drain plugs.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause / action
No standby pressure with pump(s) running Pump drive direction incorrect – stop the pump(s) immediately and contact Sleipner.
Max pressure only 20-30 bar when running a consumer LS hose missing or on the wrong port (pump "X" to valve "LS"); red emergency STOP on the info panel activated (press again to release); pump not connected to the PTO or clutch not engaged; wrong drive shaft size.
Standby pressure above 40 bar LS hose connector jamming the regulator spring – use a shorter connector (JIC threads can NOT be used).
Oil level too low Find and fix the leak, then refill. After start-up the level should not change.
Oil temperature too high Stop using the system until below 60ºC. Check 15-17 l/min cooling water at max 30ºC, clean strainers and open valves; check no consumer runs unintentionally and no relief valve is open (howling/whining sound).
Thruster runs the wrong way On/off control: swap the blue and grey wires from the panel, or swap the hoses between valve and thruster. Proportional control: turn the joystick 180 degrees or swap the hoses.
Reduced thrust Grids, sharp tunnel openings, deep tunnel installation or fouling on propeller, gear leg or tunnel; blocked filters (indicator red). Do not change performance settings without contacting Side-Power.
