The SP55–SP155 kit upgrades existing Sidepower thrusters from year 1998 or newer to include the latest safety functions.
Upgrade Procedure
- Disconnect the thruster batteries at the main switch(es).
- Disconnect the 4-way connector on the existing internal wiring loom.
- Disconnect the cable connections on both sides of the solenoid (2 x red, 1 x blue, 1 x grey); loosen the middle bolt/nut on top of the solenoid and remove the red cable. SP30: only the thin red, blue and grey wires. SP285 TC: do not remove the three wires from the series/parallel switch box.
- Disconnect the 1-way connector on the thin wire from the electric motor (over-temperature function) and remove the old loom and control box.
- Fit the new negative cable (R8 or R10, included) on the A1 battery negative terminal.
- Mount the new control box 6 123...i with its new wiring loom on the existing holding bracket.
- Connect blue, grey and red wires to the solenoid per the drawing.
- Loosen the A2 cable and fit the new white cable (with resistor on SP285 TC) with its circular cable shoe between the spring washer and the A2 cable.
- Connect the black wire of the loom to the 1-way contact from A1, and the brown wire to the 1-way contact from the motor (over-temperature).
- Check all connections against the wiring drawing; the thick cables are refitted as before.

Torque as printed. On the SP95 and SP285 TC drawings Sleipner also states that disturbed solenoid nuts and bolts (A2 and +) must be torque loaded to 20 Nm, while the steps say 15 Nm; on the SP55–SP155 and SP40S kits the drawing states 8 Nm.
Advanced Troubleshooting – Post-2005 IPC Thrusters
Panel Does Not Turn On
- Check battery power: the panel is powered through the thruster; check the fuse on the positive cable (within 72" of the battery) and the battery switch.
- Battery voltage at the thruster? If not: battery, fuse, switch or cabling.
- Voltage red to black on the motor harness pigtail, then at the panel end of the harness. Voltage at the panel but no panel = faulty panel.
- No pigtail voltage: check red wire to the battery negative stud; check the control-system negative lead to A1 continuity (about 0.2Ω-0.5Ω), then the black pigtail wire to battery negative in diode-test (about 0.5V-0.7V, a diode is fitted). No continuity = damaged motor harness.
Panel On, Thruster Does Not Run
- Unplug the panel or control harness and on the 4-wire Amp connector jump red to blue (starboard) and red to grey (port) – never red to black, it destroys the control box. Runs at the pigtail but not at the panel = harness or terminals.
- Disconnect the white IPC sensor wire on A2 and jump the battery negative stud to the D1 grey (port) or D2 blue (starboard) coil signal wire.
- Runs: check the thermo switch lead to A1 continuity (about 0.2Ω -0.5Ω); no continuity = thermo switch (or A1 stud – verify A1 to A2).
- Does not run: voltage on A2? None = solenoid pack; present = motor.
- Running voltage after 5-10 seconds must not drop below 9.5 (12 volt thruster) or 19 volts (24 volt): otherwise check battery capacity and cable voltage drop.
The guide is for thrusters with Sleipner "Plug and Play" wiring only, not those with an automatic main switch or voltage conversion box. Tools: metric Allen wrenches 4mm to 12 mm, metric wrenches, needle nose vise-grips, Phillips screwdriver, small jumper, 12" jumper with alligator clips, multi-meter. Do the run tests with the boat in the water.
