The introduction says the MIDI COMBI is designed for boats up to approximately 7 meters; the specification table says < 8m (as printed). The motor is ignition protected to ISO8846 only in combination with the 150800 controller, which itself is not ignition protected and must sit in a compartment free of flammable gases.

Installation Preparation

  • Equipment to plan: anchor, anchor bracket, rode line, thru-hull conduit, control panel, cables, control box unit and main switch with fuse.
  • Mount the windlass as high as possible; keep the anchor line straight between windlass and anchor bracket. Make the bitter end fast inside the boat.
  • If the windlass sits low relative to the anchor roller, use a hinged platform roller or the pivoting platform roller with spring «62-30000» so the anchor drops easily. Use a Sleipner hull conduit for low-friction exit.
  • Designed for a rode of 6mm chain spliced to 12mm 3-strand rope; it also works with 6mm chain only. Secure the seated anchor with the safety line.
Anchor line A min. height below windlass B width C length
12 mm x 30 m 35cm 30cm 30cm
12 mm x 50 m 40cm 35cm 35cm

Clearance under the line wheel: rope 30cm, chain 20cm. Too little clearance causes jamming and spinning when reeling in. With a horizontal exit the A/B/C relationship can vary – the line must never be forced under the windlass.

Mounting and Threading

  • The mounting bracket rotates infinitely relative to the gear leg/motor, and the anchor line guide rotates independently: fit inside the stern, hanging below deck or aft of a cross bulkhead.
  • Loosen the two bracket screws, rotate the windlass, re-tighten (max. 17 Nm). Loosen the line guide screw, aim the line down and away from obstructions, re-tighten (max. 17 Nm).
  • Whatever the orientation, the angle between where the line enters and leaves the gypsy must be maximum 90 degrees, with enough line in contact with the gypsy for grip. The line always enters from the right (gypsy rotation).
  • Thread the line between gypsy and guide (bending the guide tab tip helps), out through the deflector, then let the windlass pull the rest through, keeping it tight the first time. Mind your fingers.

Wiring

  • All wiring with the main switch/circuit breaker OFF and no battery cables attached.
  • Fit the supplied A1-A2 copper link; motor red to D1/M+, black to D2/M−, battery negative to B−, breaker/fuse to B+.
  • Battery cable size for total length A+B+C: <10m 25mm2, >10m 35mm2.
  • Control unit 150800: not water resistant or splash proof – mount it in a dry place close to the windlass motor, cables protruding downwards, on its stand-off mounts (ventilation, no condensation).
  • Use M6 terminals (6 mm bolt hole) for the battery cables and tighten all terminals to maximum 5Nm; fit spacers and washers in the order shown in the guide. Over-tightening damages the terminals.
  • Leave the breaker/fuse disconnected until the installation is complete. Motor running the wrong way: swap D1 and D2 on the control unit.
  • Switch panels 86-08950 or 86-08955 connect to the 150810 contact unit with the 4-way Sleipner cable (black V−, blue IN, grey OUT, red V+); several panels can share one control unit.
  • Main switch / circuit breaker 119-00015 (Midi 150A) MUST be used in this installation; it works as both MCB and main switch, with one battery and one AUX connection.
  • Switch ON by moving the pin switch upwards; switch OFF with the red button. Mount it within easy reach and turn it OFF when the windlass is not in use.
  • Wrong connection of these high-current components generates heat and can cause fire.

Configuring the Controller

  1. Press and hold "Config" for 3 seconds until the Power and Fault LEDs blink.
  2. Press "Config" to cycle until the Mode LEDs show MIDI COMBI (chain, or chain-and-rope rode). This setting needs controller firmware V1.013 or newer.
  3. The controller returns to normal operation after 3 seconds; check the pattern (also printed on the back of the terminal covers).

Other settings: NOT SET, MINI ROPE, MIDI ROPE, MAXI ROPE, MAXI CHAIN and MHPP ROPE (special installations only – it can damage the windlass if not required).

Fault Codes

  • When the "Fault" LED is lit, the Mode LEDs (under the terminal cover) show the last fault: Low Voltage, Motor Overload, Controller Overtemp, Motor Overtemp, Controller Overload or Runtime Exceeded. Some faults inhibit operation, others allow continued use.

Operating Safety

  • Keep clear of the windlass, anchor line, anchor and brackets during operation, and watch the rope or chain while handling the anchor.
  • If the windlass strains while raising, stop for a few seconds and let the boat gain momentum. If the anchor is stuck, pay out some line, make it fast to a cleat and use the boat to break it out: the windlass is not designed for loads beyond its rated pull.
  • The anchor must always be secured to the boat while under way (safety line or other means).
  • Keep the engine running during windlass operation. Children must not operate the windlass. Never use it close to anyone in the water.
  • While dropping the anchor, do not press "UP" until the anchor is resting on the seabed.

Make sure there is enough anchor weight for the line to run out: it must overcome the friction and weight of the line and pulley system. Warranty: two years for leisure use, one year for commercial and other non-leisure use, from delivery to the end user (dealer and builder grace periods apply). Wearable/service parts are not covered, and skipping the maintenance described in the manuals voids the warranty on the affected parts.
