INSTALLATION MANUAL

Dimensions, specifications, mounting and clearances, power-lug torques and the electrical reference (current draw, battery CCA and fuse) for SEP, SEP-IP, SXP, SRP and SRLP/SRVP thrusters run through a Sleipner Side-Power PPC520, PPC820 or PPC840 Proportional Power Controller.

Sleipner Proportional Power Controller PPC520, PPC820, PPC840 — Installation Manual

PPC Specifications

PPC520 PPC820 PPC840
DC system 12v & 24v 12v & 24v 48v
Supply voltage 9 - 31V 9 - 31V 36 - 60V
Output voltage 20 - 100% x Vbatt 20 - 100% x Vbatt 20 - 100% x Vbatt
Output current 500A 1000A 550A
Regulation PWM, S-Link controlled PWM, S-Link controlled PWM, S-Link controlled
Protection Thermal, under-voltage, over-current Thermal, under-voltage, over-current Thermal, under-voltage, over-current

Safety: the PPC turns off motor power each time the main solenoids are activated, removing any possibility of solenoid lock-in; a solenoid fault is reported to the panel and cuts motor power.

Mounting

  • Wall-mount in a dry, well-ventilated compartment, vertical, with the cable connectors facing down; fix with the four attachment screws.
  • Minimum clearance: 50mm above, 150mm below, 100mm in front and at the sides – the PPC gets hot.
  • Branch the battery positive cable at the PPC terminal, not at the thruster motor. A 5m multi-cable runs between thruster motor and PPC (8-lead control cable).
  • Keep cables away from hot objects. Ignition-protected and non-ignition-protected equipment go in separate, clearly designated compartments.

Power Lugs

  • One, two or four power cables can be connected per terminal; with several lugs keep the lug faces back to back.
  • Motor lugs: M8 nut max 13Nm (9.59lb/ft), M10 nut max 23Nm (16.96lb/ft); hold the inner nut while tightening.
  • SEP-IP thrusters: lug nut 18Nm (13.8lb/ft) with the isolation cap.
  • SXP35 / SXP50 control box: 8 - 9.5 NM (6 - 7 ft/lb) and 3.6 - 3.9 NM (2.7 - 2.9 ft/lb) as shown in the manual.
  • Never put washers between lugs – it causes overheating and fire. Spring washers go in the outer position before the nut.

With the main switch off and everything connected, check with an ohm meter that there is no connection between the motor flange and either motor terminal. Observe PPC battery terminal polarity.

  • The manual gives the same values for SEP-IP and SRLP/SRVP thrusters, plus 80/185T and 100/185T for SXP80/SXP100 and SRP retract thrusters, and the min./rec. power cable cross sections for total cable runs from <7m to 36-45m.
  • Total cable length = battery + via fuse, main switch and PPC to the motor and back to battery –. Slow-blow fuses that hold nominal current for minimum 5 minutes.
  • Fuse and main switch close to the battery positive; a Sleipner Automatic Main Switch (S-Link or on/off versions) follows the panel and needs its own fused supply.
  • Wiring diagrams cover single (top) and dual bow-and-stern (top and bottom) systems at 12V and 24V, and 48V for SRLP/SRVP with the PPC840.
  • PPC setup is done from the control panel: follow the panel installation guide.
