CAN Interface (NMEA 2000)

Connection

  • GW-1 is an NMEA2000 certified device. Connect an S-Link spur cable to the S-Link backbone and the NMEA 2000 equipment to the M12 male CAN INTERFACE connector.
  • Use for engine system, GNSS antenna, joystick controls, DP-system and autopilot integration; do not connect it to other networks (interference or crashes).
  • GW-1 does not power the CAN bus and has no termination resistor on the M12 output: the CAN bus needs its own power feed and terminators. CAN-L and CAN-H are galvanically isolated.
  • Use standard NMEA 2000 micro cable (not supplied by Sleipner).
  • M12 pinout: pin 1 NC, pin 2 NC, pin 3 GND, pin 4 CAN-H, pin 5 CAN-L.
  • TX / RX LEDs flash (max 100ms on / 100ms off) when sending / receiving.

NMEA 0183 GPS Input

  • V OUT can power a single GPS antenna, max 100mA, internally fused; V OUT is S-Link bus voltage. RX A(+) and TX B(-) are galvanically isolated.
  • 4800 and 38400 baud are supported and set automatically; $GxRMC sentences from all positioning systems are supported.
  • NMEA 0183 LED: off = no valid GPS signal; flashes 100ms/100ms for a valid message at 38400 baud, 100ms/900ms at 4800 baud.
  • GNSS priority: 1) NMEA0183 at 100ms update rate, 2) NMEA2000, 3) NMEA0183 at 1000ms. Only one NMEA 2000 antenna is forwarded, and with several GW-1 only one broadcasts GNSS on S-Link (requires GW-1 firmware V1.021 or newer).
  • Status LED: off = no power; on = S-Link communication and power OK; flashing 500ms/500ms = power OK but no S-Link communication.

Installing the GW-1

  1. Fasten the GW-1 box to a solid surface with four mounting screws.
  2. Attach the required cables: S-Link spur, NMEA 2000 and/or NMEA 0183. No external power is needed – GW-1 is powered from S-Link.

Any direct connection to S-Link without an approved Sleipner interface voids the warranty of the connected Sleipner products.
