  • * SEP and SEP-IP supply voltage is measured at the PPC (Proportional Power Controller) supply terminals.
  • Maximum operation time: S2 motor at 2–3 min. duty cycle at 20°C ambient temperature.
  • A minimum clearance of 90mm above the thruster is required for the control cable.

The specification tables in the SEP-IP guides are headed with the SEP model names. The SEP-IP30/40 guide also lists SEP20 and SEP25, and the SEP-IP80/120 and SEP-IP100/130 guides also list SEP150, which have no SEP-IP guide.

Dimensions are printed "valid for SE IP & SEP IP". In the SEP-IP30/40 guide the second column is headed "SE IP 40 24v" (as printed) although the specification table lists SEP40 at 12V only. Propeller position varies with each model; the gear leg and propeller(s) must never extend out of the tunnel.

Ignition Protection Rules

  • Never disassemble any part of the ignition-protected assembly: tampering removes the safety feature. Contact your dealer if there is a problem with an IP motor.
  • A Sleipner system may combine ignition-protected and non-ignition-protected components: install them in separate, clearly designated compartments with proper sealing and ventilation.
  • Electrical products in gasoline engine spaces or other areas exposed to explosive gases must be ignition protected, conforming to ISO 8846, SAE J1171 or UL 1500.
  • The motor can exceed 100°C before the temperature switch trips: keep loose items away. IP motors generate carbon dust but it is enclosed.
  • Lithium batteries: the battery must deliver the continuous thruster current (an under-rated BMS can disconnect suddenly). With lithium, the PPC firmware must be version 1.033 or later.
  • Never run the thruster out of the water, and never rest the motor on its drive shaft.

Positioning the Tunnel

  • Install as far forward as possible (more leverage around the pivot point) and as deep as possible: as a general rule the tunnel centre at least 1× the tunnel diameter below the waterline, and the tunnel preferably not closer than 1/4 of its diameter to the keel.
  • Avoid tunnels longer than 4× the tunnel diameter (friction reduces thrust); too short a tunnel (typically the bottom section) causes cavitation. The gear leg and propellers must always be fully inside the tunnel. Flat-bottom hulls and high-speed boats need longer tunnels than the standard measurement.
  • Sailboats with a flat, shallow bow: the tunnel can be fitted halfway into the underside of the hull with a deflector/spoiler directing the water flow round it – used by large sailboat builders with little to no speed loss.
  • Above about 25 knots a deflector/spoiler must protect the tunnel from the front and the bottom. As a rule you should not see the back face of the tunnel when standing directly in front of the boat looking aft; a recess aft of the tunnel or a spoiler forward of it reduces drag.
  • Round the tunnel ends to a radius of at least 10% of the tunnel diameter (steel/aluminium hulls: a slope 10–15% of the diameter). A rounded entry can add 30–40% "free" thrust; a Sleipner propeller does not cavitate at working speed, so cavitation noise points to the tunnel installation.

Fibreglass Tunnel Installation

  1. Mark the tunnel centre on both sides of the hull and drill horizontally; cut the hole for the tunnel outside diameter.
  2. Grind the gel coat back to real fibreglass 12cm around the hole, inside and outside.
  3. Fit the tunnel, mark and cut the ends to the hull shape (leave material forward and below if you are building a spoiler); sand lightly and clean with acetone.
  4. Cast the tunnel to the inside of the hull with at least eight layers of 300g fibreglass and resin (alternate mat and roving); fill all gaps. Do not laminate where the motor bracket will sit.
  5. Outside: round the edges (R = 10% of D), cast two layers in a 10cm area round the tunnel and gel coat all ground areas. Original Sleipner tunnels are waterproof except where cut and bonded.

General guidance only: problems caused by faulty tunnel installation are the installer's responsibility. Use a professional boat builder when modifying the hull. Stern tunnels: follow the manual supplied with the stern tunnel.

Gear Leg, Propeller and Motor

  1. Mark the tunnel and boat centrelines; fit the gear leg so thrust direction matches the control panel (larger models: P-mark to port, S-mark to starboard).
  2. Mark the holes with the gasket or a template (recommended); the centre hole must be on the boat centreline and all holes in line with the tunnel centreline. Drill the centre hole first, then the two screw holes, and smooth the tunnel surface so the bracket rests steadily.
  3. Dry-fit the gear leg with gasket and the propeller (not secured) to check it is centred with equal blade clearance, and check the drive shaft height through the motor bracket with the supplied template.
  4. Apply MS Polymer sealant or equal to both sides of the gasket (not in the bolt holes), fit gear leg and motor bracket and tighten to the torque below.
  5. Anti-foul the gear leg and propeller (not rubber parts or anodes). Fit the propeller (check the LH/RH marking on the back of the propeller mould on twin-propeller models), washer and lock nut; on the larger models fit the anode with thread glue (Loctite 243 or similar).
  6. Fit the motor with the couplings engaged (minimum 80% engagement of the motor coupling with the gear leg holding key on the larger models). Above 30 degrees off vertical the motor needs separate support. Check the propeller can still be turned by hand.
  7. Protect the motor from dust and debris during boatbuilding work and remove the cover before running the thruster.

Electrical Installation

  • Main components: battery, fuse, main switch, PPC and thruster motor. Fit the fuse and main switch as close as possible to the positive battery terminal; the main switch must be easy to reach. Dual thrusters on one battery bank: a dedicated fuse and main switch for each thruster.
  • Automatic Main Switch (AMS): switched on and off with the control panel, so electronics and motor are only live with the panel on. It needs its own fused supply (5A fuse in the wiring diagrams) and a voltage rating matching motor and battery.
  • Total cable length = positive battery terminal → fuse → main switch → PPC → motor → back to the negative terminal. Undersized cable or a weak battery reduces voltage at the motor, and with it rpm and thrust; a battery close to the thruster helps.
  • Lugs: lug faces back to back, no washers between lugs (overheating and fire risk), spring washer in the outer position, hold the inner nut while tightening.
  • After wiring, with the main switch off, check with an ohmmeter that neither motor terminal is connected to the motor flange.
