- Lubrication: SH100, SH160, SH240 and SH320 are sealed with an oil bath (EP-90); SH360 and up are fed from an oil tank (API GL-5, SAE 80W-90); SH1000 and SH1400 allow on-water oil change.
- Hydraulic thrusters are supplied with the hydraulic motor only. Without an original Sleipner hydraulic system the installer must fit an oil filter and an oil cooler keeping oil below 75°C (recommended 40-60°C), a valve with flow and pressure limits within the thruster's capability, and preferably a shock valve set 10% - 15% above the chosen maximum pressure. Sleipner S-Link must be used for thruster control.
- A crossover valve must be mounted as close as possible to the motor: 3/4" valve on SH400, 1" valve on SH700, SH1000 and SH1400.
Figures from the 2025 user manual. The installation manuals print some different values: SH100 7.8 kg, SH360 heavy duty 360 kg, SH550 "56 kW / 123.45 hp" (as printed), SH700 43.3 kW and 61.3 kg, SH1000 light duty 1000 kg.

- * Drain port connector must not extend internally beyond 10,5mm from the end face. The drain must be installed – always use the upper drain port for best motor lubrication.
- Use only parallel threaded adaptors, preferably with soft seal; no plumbing tape, hemp or thread sealant.
- Pre-fill the motor housing with hydraulic oil before start-up, and keep the motor ports covered until the hoses are connected.

The gear leg and propellers must never extend out of the tunnel. Tunnel position, length, deflectors and rounded ends (radius 10% of diameter) follow the same rules as all Sleipner tunnel thrusters; metal hulls need the Sleipner galvanic isolation kit.

- Gear leg P-mark to port, S-mark to starboard; check propeller clearance dry, then fit with MS Polymer sealant on both gasket faces (not in the bolt holes). Oil or grease the bracket O-rings on SH360 and up. SH1000/SH1400: filler between the tunnel and the motor bracket gasket; thread paste on the bolts where the manual calls for it.
- Twin propellers: LH to port, RH to starboard. Keyed propellers: approx. 1mm gap to the gear leg; grease only the thread; torque without washer, remove, grease the washer face, refit and fold the tab washer; Loctite 243 or similar on anode screws.
- SH100 to SH550: grease the shafts with seawater resistant grease, align the holding keys and make sure the motor coupling engages the gear leg holding key by at least 80%. The propeller must turn by hand afterwards.
- SH700 to SH1400: spider coupling between the hubs, centred through the bracket side openings; the flexible coupling must not be subject to axial load. General bolt torques in the SH700 manual: M8 35 Nm, M10 69 Nm, M12 120 Nm (second table: M12 100Nm, M20 150Nm).
- SH360 and up: pre-fill the gear leg with API GL-5, SAE 80W-90 (0.4 L SH360/SH400, 0.76 L SH420/SH550, 1 L SH700, 3.3 L SH1000, 3.7 L SH1400); oil container above the waterline by at least 20% of the waterline-to-tunnel-centre distance, oil tube without loops.
The SH700 manual prints the 85 Nm motor bolt torque as "752.31 lb/ft" (as printed); the SH1000/1400 manual gives 62 lb/ft.
Operation
- Main power on, then the panel; push or move the joystick the way you want the bow/stern to go. Proportional systems follow joystick travel.
- For manoeuvring and docking only: forward or reverse speed must not exceed 4 knots when used; above about 1-2 kn it has little steering effect.
- Two panels giving opposite directions at the same time stop the thruster. If it stops giving thrust, stop it at once – running without propeller load damages the drive.
- Never use near people, animals or objects in the water; switch off the main power before touching any part of the thruster.
Seasonal Service
- Compartment clean and dry, no water or oil leaks; electrical connections clean and tight; batteries in good condition.
- Out of the water: check propellers and tunnel for damage, propellers secure (LH/RH correct on counter-rotating models), clean off growth, anti-foul propeller and gear leg – never the anode, rubber seals or propeller shaft.
- Replace the anode every season or at half eroded, with sealant or thread glue on the screw.
- Models with an external oil tank: the level must stay constant.
- Motor runs but no thrust: check propellers and LH/RH fitting, the flexible coupling and the gears. Reduced thrust: clean growth from propeller, gear house and tunnel; check hydraulic oil pressure and levels.

Key: 1 hydraulic motor, 2 mounting plate, 3 motor bracket, 4 flexible coupling, 5 gear leg, 6 propeller, 7 anode, 8 drive pin, 9 washer, 10 lock nut, 11 anode fastening screw, 12 oil drain screw, 13 shaft key, 14 anode pins, 15 locking washer.
