Operating Your Thruster

  1. Turn on the thruster main power switch (always off when you leave the boat).
  2. Turn on the panel by pushing the "ON" button(s) simultaneously; "OFF" switches it off.
  3. Push the button or move the joystick the way you want the bow or stern to go. With proportional control, thrust follows joystick/throttle travel: a slight move for minimal thrust, the end point for maximum.
  • Bow and stern together: both the same way to move sideways, opposite ways to spin the boat on its axis. Hold function (if fitted): + or - changes the holding force.
  • Release shortly before the boat reaches position – it keeps drifting. Above about 1-2 kn the thruster has little steering effect; it is for manoeuvring and docking only, at no more than 4 knots forward or reverse.
  • Two panels giving opposite directions stop the thruster. If it stops giving thrust, switch it off: running more than a few seconds without propeller load can severely damage the drive.
  • Never use near people, animals or objects in the water, and switch off the main power before touching any part of the thruster. Practise in open water first.

The manual also gives 60% and 80% values and USG/PSI. Some motors (SH700 BA40/BA45, SH1000 G70/G75/BA80, SH1400 BA125) are listed at part load only, and the SH360 U23 row is misprinted – check the PDF or the SH installation manual for your motor.

Seasonal Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Every Season

  • Compartment clean and dry, no water or oil leaks; electrical connections clean and tight; batteries in good condition.
  • Out of the water: check propellers and tunnel for impact damage, propellers fastened (LH/RH correct on counter-rotating models), all components secure; clean growth from tunnel and gear leg.
  • Anti-foul propeller and gear leg – never the anode, rubber seals or propeller shaft, and keep paint out of the gap between propeller and gear leg.
  • Replace the anode every season or when half eroded, with sealant or thread glue on the securing screw.
  • With an external oil tank, the oil level must remain the same.

Troubleshooting

  • Motor runs, no thrust: propellers fitted and fastened, shaft undamaged, LH and RH propellers on the right sides; flexible coupling between motor and drive shaft fitted and intact; gears undamaged.
  • Reduced performance: propeller, gear house and tunnel free of growth, barnacles and debris; check hydraulic oil pressure and levels.
  • S-Link control panels display fault codes on the panel; see the panel manual for the full list.
