HS = high speed priority, MIX = balanced priority, AA = at anchor priority. Fins have zero weight in water. Hull thickness tolerance is +0/-5mm: the hull must NOT be thicker than 70mm (SPS66B) or 86mm (SPS92B, 93B, 96B). Bearings must NOT be lubricated with any kind of lubrication.

Fin Loads on the Hull

  • Values are normalised from equilibrium considerations; wave impacts and other dynamic effects can raise hull and shaft loads, so dimension with a safety factor.
  • The aft top face of the fin is deliberately weaker so it breaks first if it hits the hull. Strengthen the hull (or build it to take impacts) over the full fin length within about 10 degrees of fin rotation either side of centre.
  • Hull reinforcement, stability, watertight integrity and noise proofing are the installer's / boat builder's responsibility, confirmed by a naval architect.

Fin Positioning

  • No part of the fin above water in normal roll; fins must not extend outside the beam or below the keel in neutral.
  • As far outboard as possible and not in line with the propellers (vibration / cavitation risk).
  • Close to the longitudinal centre of gravity (usually a little aft of 50% of waterline length). High-speed boats: leading/trailing edge within the middle 1/4 of the waterline length at speed and not ahead of the LCG; under 15 knots: within the middle 1/4 of waterline length.
  • Keep at least 22 degrees of outboard stroke; avoid cutting the aft top of a Vector Fin (adds drag and loses force). The actuator can sit in any radial 360° position, but plan for full fin travel both ways and fin alignment parallel to the keel.

Measured from the shaft centre along the hull bottom to the chine start (upper) and to outside the boat envelope (lower).

Hull Cut-Out & Actuator Mounting

  1. Drill a 21mm pilot hole on the fin shaft centre line from outside, then cut the hole from inside with a jig: Ø 190 mm (SPS66B) or Ø 245 mm (SPS92B, 93B, 96B).
  2. Make the surrounding hull 70mm (SPS66B) or 86mm (others) thick including sealant, flat and parallel inside and out. Reinforce as specified by the naval architect.
  3. Mark and drill the securing bolt holes using the external securing plate as template (plate Ø A 395 mm / 15.6" for SPS66B, 480 mm / 18.9" for the others), countersunk for bolt heads and sealant.
  4. Lower the actuator assembly in (never lift by the cylinders or rams), hold it with two bolts, seal the gap between hull hole and shaft core.
  5. Seal the outside surface, fit the external securing plate, coat the bolts with sealant, fit washers and nuts and torque diagonally to 110 Nm. Remove the locking pin to swing the twin yoke for access.
  6. Bond each actuator to the yacht's main bonding/anode system.

Hull-compatible sealant only, confirmed by the naval architect or boat builder. Lift the yacht with the fins locked/neutral and tell the crane crew the fins are there; road transport may require removing the fins.

Hydraulic Installation

  • Tank: accessible for filters and oil filling, high enough to gravity-feed the pumps, secured and electrically grounded to the bonding system; everything scrupulously clean.
  • Pump rotation is decided facing the pump shaft, i.e. opposite to the engine / PTO / generator (nameplate L=CCW, R=CW). Never run the power source before the pump is installed and pre-filled with oil.
  • Hoses per the system drawings, fitted by trained professionals, flushed or cleaned with jet pellets first (cleanliness class ISO 4406-1999 21/19/16). Re-tighten after start-up and sea trial if needed.
  • Oil: prime the pumps through their upper drain port, then fill through a 10 micron filter trolley with new mineral hydraulic oil ISO VG46 (ISO 11158 Class HV/DIN 51524 Part 3 Class HVLP); level about 3/4 full, mid upper sight glass.
  • PTO pre-start: standby pressure 10-30 bar per engine; no pressure means wrong pump rotation. Refill only after the accumulator is de-pressurised.
  • Actuator valve unit: red button for manual de-coupling; re-torque the decouple valve coil nut to 6.8-9.5 Nm (5-7 Ft-lbs) – over-torque damages it. Never cable-tie anything to the moving hoses.
  • Fin valve unit: within 2,5m of the actuator valve unit (max 3,5m), minimum 2 layer steel braided hoses (stiffer hose or rigid pipe beyond 2,5m), on a rigid flat surface with vibration damping. Manual decouple: 9/16" lock nut and 3/16" Allen key anti-clockwise; fully closed in normal operation.
  • Accumulator: bladder charge pressure 45bar nitrogen. Most are shipped without nitrogen – fill or check before start-up; running without it damages the system. Filling kit 321308 covers several European countries; others need HYDAC adapters.
  • Main valve unit: the manual unloading valve must be fully closed (clockwise) in normal operation.

Electrical Installation

  • SCU: on a bulkhead perpendicular to the keel, as central as possible (e.g. forward or aft engine room bulkhead), cable outlet DOWN; facing bow or aft is set in the panel. Power from a 15A fused 24V DC supply.
  • FCU: close to the actuator and fin valve unit, on a vibration-free surface. Proportional valve A/B connectors can be swapped – commissioning detects direction.
  • Control panel (TP-43A, 4,3" touch panel): 9-31V, 2A fused circuit; front or flush rear mounting; keep the USB port reachable (extension for upgrades only).
  • GW-1 gateway within 10m of the GPS receiver; GPS can also come from NMEA2000. Reverse detection via the SCU loop cable or NMEA2000.
  • VFD (single-phase AC powerpack): within 4 meters of the PHC-3, protected from spray, own breaker, screened motor cable. First AC pump start is manual from the PHC-3 with the VFD in REMOTE mode and main engines off.
  • S-Link: one T-connector and spur per unit; the yellow (shield) wire of the power spur goes with the black wire to battery minus.

Fitting the Vector Fins

  1. Rotate the port actuator fully clockwise and the starboard actuator fully counter-clockwise (seen from inside/above) – fully outboard. Open the manual decouple valve if there is no power yet, or use the panel (STARTUP and MAINTENANCE → STARTUP, password 1234 → FIN INSTALLATION).
  2. Remove the actuator shaft protective cover (blow air into its bottom hole; do not cut it), clean and degrease the taper. Remove the fin shaft covers (4mm Allen key) and clean the hub.
  3. Lubricate shaft and securing ring with hydraulic oil ISO VG 100 – no grease. Molykote/grease on the bolt threads. Lift the correct-handed fin on, hold it with two nuts.
  4. Remove the ON and OFF plugs; connect the hand pump (installation tool kit VFT55) high-pressure hose to ON, bleed air, keep OFF open for drainage.
  5. Fit the Nord-lock washers and nuts, bring the cones into contact, nuts to 10 Nm in a cross pattern; record the flange-to-base distance through the 7 holes.
  6. Pump oil while tightening the nuts with a 19mm spanner in a circular pattern until the drive-up shortens that distance by 2,8-3,0mm (SPS66) or 4,7-5,0mm (SPS92, 93, 96). Final torque 60Nm.
  7. Close the decouple valve (lock nut 15 Nm), refit the ON/OFF plugs 15 min after drive-up, fit the shaft protectors (grind them if they rub).
  8. Set keel centre: FLOAT, make the fore and aft fin edges equidistant from the keel, LOCK, SET KEEL CENTRE. Fit the fin location safety labels on the hull.
Fastener Max. torque
Shaft cover bolts 5 Nm
Oil port plugs (2 PCS) 15 Nm
Fin nuts (12 PCS, special locking washers) 60 NM

Fin removal: record fin-to-keel distances, loosen (do not remove) the nuts, pump oil into the OFF port until the fin drops onto the nuts, then two people take its weight while the nuts come off.

Start-Up & Sea Trial

  • Before start-up: complete hydraulics and electrics running, stabilizers (and At Anchor) OFF on the panel, AC pump AUTO/ON or PTO ON. Factory parameters are boat-dependent: change them only on Sleipner's request.
  • Settings: reverse/backing detection (SCU input or NMEA2000), SCU mount direction, suspend exit state, thruster-on handling, fin actuator type and fin type.
  • STARTUP: bleed the actuators (repeat as needed), DETECT ENDSTOP (defines actuator stroke), ZERO INCLINATION with the yacht level and still, PARK CENTRE (use keel centre recommended).
  • AC pump standby pressure at the accumulator gauge: 75 BAR VF650, 90 BAR VF800/VF1350, 100 BAR VF1050, 110 BAR VF1650/VF1950. Checklist by motor: 3.5 kW 75 bar, 4.6 kW 90 bar, 5.5 kW 90 bar (100 bar with VF1050), 7.5 kW 100 bar, 11 kW 90 bar, 15 kW 1-phase 100 bar, 15 kW 3-phase 110 bar.
  • Cooling pump below the waterline, no air traps in water lines, minimal back pressure on the discharge (not into the engine exhaust).
  • Sea trial, dynamic centre: in flat water float the fins, start the logger, run to maximum speed and record free-float positions at speeds from the top down, including one speed below and one above planing. The lowest speed is set to 0 knots with fins parallel to the keel.
Step Speed (knots) Port fin adjustment Starboard fin adjustment
1 12 -3° +3°
2 18 -4° +4°
3 24 -5° +5°
4 30 -4° +4°
5 36 -3° +3°

Typical starting corrections from dynamic centre tests on around 70' planing V-hull boats; avoid over-correcting, the actuator needs torque reserve to counter roll.
