Fin Positioning & Hull Structural Forces

  • Fins must not extend outside the beam (including fenders) or below the keel/propeller in neutral, must stay submerged in normal roll, and should be as far outboard as possible and not in line with the propellers.
  • Close to the LCG (usually a little aft of 50% of waterline length); high-speed boats within the middle 1/4 of waterline length at speed and not ahead of the LCG; under 15 knots within the middle 1/4 of waterline length.
  • Keep at least 22 degrees of outboard stroke. Mechanical range 360°; operational range <90° outward and <45° inward, and the range can be limited to a segment.
  • Values are normalised; dimension the hull with a safety factor for wave impacts. Hull reinforcement must follow a naval architect's recommendations; isolate actuator noise near living areas.

Minimum thickness ensures the seal between hull and actuator; maximum avoids sealant between fin hub and actuator.

  1. Drill a pilot hole on the shaft centre line from outside, cut the hole from inside with a jig, and make the surrounding hull flat and parallel to the target thickness.
  2. Use the external hull plate as template: pilot holes from inside, final holes from outside; countersink all holes and chamfer the hull under the 4 filler injection ports.
  3. Steps 9-17 must be completed within the cure time of the sealant. Seal the mating surfaces (not the inner chamfers) and lower the actuator (approx 300kg possible) with lifting slings and mechanical support.
  4. At least one of the four oil drainage holes at the lowest point; keep the condensation drain holes (directly above them) free of sealant.
  5. Centre the shaft core in the hole (wedges, never hammered) with the injection ports clear over the chamfer.
  6. Seal and fit the hull plate and bolts; grease the nut threads and tighten in the numbered diagonal order in two stages.
  7. Seal the lower gap with EPDM cord pushed 25mm past the red polyurethane ring, then fill the lower void with polyurethane sealant – none in the gap between the polyurethane ring and the external seal plate.
  8. Once cured, inject filler compound (Chock Fast Orange PR610TCF, Steel Blue, Epocast 36 or Locktite PC7202) from the lowest port until it flows clean from the top one (about 500mm of hose on the upper port), then fit blind plugs. Remove leftover compound from the boat (exothermic fire risk).

Antifoul the actuator surfaces with the hull, but mask the openings into the actuator and the fin installation surface.

SPS70E +48V 155A 120A 50mm2 / AWG-1 150A

Per actuator; cable sizes are indicative and remain the installer's responsibility. Time at anchor is limited by battery capacity.

  • Ground each actuator to the main bonding/anode system at both points with M6x10 bolts.
  • Power connectors come as a kit: strip 18 +/-1 mm, fit end nut and sleeve (plus barrel for 16mm2), crimp with a hexagonal tool, tighten the end nut.
  • SCU: stable surface perpendicular to the keel, as central as possible (e.g. engine room bulkhead), connectors down, 200mm cable clearance. 24V DC with a 15A fuse on X1 (a dedicated switch is recommended); S-Link spur on X2; starboard actuator on X5, port on X6.
  • SCU-actuator cables: 151370-040 (4m), -070 (7m), -100 (10m), -150 (15m), -200 (20m), -250 (25m), -300 (30m); port and starboard lengths may differ.
  • GPS speed data is required, through the GW-1 gateway (NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000). Fins must centre in reverse: choose the SCU kit for NMEA 2000 transmission PGN127493 (SCU-KIT-2F-NMEA), Twin Disk or ZF pressure switches in series on X3 (SCU-KIT-2F-TD / -ZF; open switch = reverse) or the reversing solenoid interface for 24V solenoid signals (SCU-KIT-2F-SO).

Keel Alignment, Fin Fitting & Set-Up

  • Keel alignment is done once, on shore, before the fins go on (repeat only after an encoder replacement). Clamp a straightedge to the alignment tool on the fin hub, then in the panel (PIN 1234 standard): Setup → Fin installation → select actuator and fin type → Start motor self tuning → adjust with the arrows until the straightedge is parallel to the keel → Confirm keel center. Keep clear: the tool may rotate.
  • Fit the fin: align tongue and groove, locking washer on each of the 10 bolts, lubricant (Tef-Gel, lithium grease or Loctite 771) on the upper bolt threads only – none in the holes or on the plate – then torque in the numbered order in two stages.
  • Shaft covers: threadlock (e.g. Loctite 243) on the setscrews; the two covers are handed.
  • Zero inclination: with the boat level automatically, or enter a manual offset (heel to port positive, to starboard negative).
  • Dynamic centering at sea in flat water: float the fins and capture speed and fin position at five increasing speeds (1/5 near idle to top speed), including speeds below and above planing; use trim tabs/interceptors as normal.
  • Set Backing detection and SCU mount direction in Settings → Handling; other parameters are generic defaults (Sleipner can supply hull-specific values). Fit the fin location labels on the hull.

Checklist: update TP-43A, SCU and all S-Link devices to the latest firmware at first power-up; check actuator cable polarity, fuses, ground wires, SCU orientation and X5/X6 cables; S-Link power on the same fuse as the rest of the system.
