Fin Positioning & Hull Structural Forces

  • Fins must not extend outside the beam (including fenders) or below the keel/propeller in neutral, must stay submerged in normal roll, and should be as far outboard as possible and not in line with the propellers.
  • Close to the LCG (usually a little aft of 50% of waterline length); high-speed boats within the middle 1/4 of waterline length at speed and not ahead of the LCG; under 15 knots within the middle 1/4 of waterline length.
  • Keep at least 22 degrees of outboard stroke. Mechanical range 360°; operational range <90° outward and <45° inward, limitable to a segment.
  • Values are normalised: dimension with a safety factor for wave impacts; hull reinforcement per a naval architect; isolate actuator noise near living areas.

Versions without hull plate (SPS90E, SPS110E, SPS120E)

All bolts secured with a thread locker defined by a naval architect and compatible with A4 stainless steel fasteners.

  • Steps 9-17 must be completed within the sealant cure time. Lower the actuator with lifting slings and mechanical support; at least one oil drainage hole at the lowest point; condensation drain holes free of sealant.
  • Centre the shaft core with the 4 injection ports clear over the chamfer; seal and bolt; EPDM cord 25mm past the red polyurethane ring, then polyurethane sealant in the lower void (none between the ring and the external seal plate).
  • When cured, inject filler compound (Chock Fast Orange PR610TCF, Steel Blue, Epocast 36 or Locktite PC7202) from the lowest port until it flows out of the top one (500mm upper hose for flow-back), then plug. Remove leftover compound from the boat (exothermic fire risk).
  • Antifoul the actuator with the hull, but mask the openings into the actuator and the fin installation surface.

Keel Alignment, Fin Fitting & Set-Up

  • Keel alignment once, on shore, before the fins go on (repeat only after an encoder replacement): straightedge on the alignment tool, then in the panel (PIN 1234 standard) Setup → Fin installation → actuator and fin type → Start motor self tuning → adjust parallel to the keel → Confirm keel center. Keep clear: the tool may rotate.
  • Fin: align tongue and groove, locking washer on each of the 10 bolts, lubricant on the upper bolt threads only, torque in the numbered order in two stages. Shaft covers are handed; threadlock (e.g. Loctite 243) on the setscrews.
  • Zero inclination with the boat level (or manual offset: heel to port positive, starboard negative), then dynamic centering at sea in flat water at five increasing speeds including below and above planing.
  • Set Backing detection and SCU mount direction under Settings → Handling; fit the fin location labels.
