  • All are S2 motors rated for a 2 - 3 min. duty cycle at 20°C ambient; the maximum continuous run time is approximately 3 minutes and a built-in thermal cut-off stops an overheating motor (auto-reset when it cools). Plan your manoeuvres accordingly.
  • Thrust ratings are at the voltage measured at the motor terminals while running.
  • DC motors produce some carbon dust (IP versions are enclosed): keep storage separate from the thruster compartment.
  • Lithium batteries can supply a higher voltage than ON/OFF thrusters are rated for, which shortens run time and damages the thruster; operating outside the ratings voids the warranty.
  • SRP-V300 (2021 manual): typical boat size 22m - 30m / 72ft - 100ft, 5-blade skewback "Q-prop" propeller, panels shut off automatically 6 minutes after last use and the thruster retracts when the panel is turned off.

The SRP-L&V80 installation manual prints the weight as "31 kg / 61 lbs" (as printed); the user manual gives 31 kg / 68 lbs.

Minimum depth of the tunnel below the waterline: 185mm for SR 80 & 100, 250mm for SR 130 & 210, 300mm for SR 250 & 300 (water depth WD 185 mm in the SRP-L&V80/100 tables). Allow 100mm clear space round the unit.

Position, Flange and Cut-out

  • Hatch opens towards the bow. Bow units on the keel centre line, as far forward as the depth requirement allows; stern units may be offset to clear stern drives, propellers, trim tabs and rudders.
  • Sandwich hulls: remove the inner laminate and core at least 100mm round the flange and reinforce with bonding layers.
  • Trim the SRF flange to the hull curvature without cutting the length edge; cut the hatch at 45º on three sides and 30º on the bow face after drilling corner holes at 45º.
  • Keep the red spacer block in place until the hatch installation tells you to remove it (older SRP-V300: wooden safety part above the propeller).
  • Pre-check with DIP switch 4 ON (service mode): DOWN/UP to confirm the hatch opens clear of the hull and closes flush with pressure on the contact edges; grind the flange or wedge up its aft end as needed. The hatch/hull contact edges are the mechanical end stop.

Bonding and Assembly

  • Grind gelcoat back round the opening and on the flange, glue the flange in position, laminate inside and out with compatible resin, coat. SRF flanges and SR(P)80/100 housings are polyester.
  • Housing on the flange with MS polymer on the flange surface; bolts 4Nm - 2,9lb/ft in a cross pattern (on SR L&V 80/100 some bolts go in from underneath to clear the position sensor and actuator bracket).
  • Hatch: drill four 11mm holes, countersink, glue on the twist rings, bolt up with lock nuts, fill the hull/hatch gap and coat.
  • Motor to housing: 33Nm (24lb/ft). More than 30 degrees off vertical needs separate motor support (never support on the motor cap). Shaft coupling halves approx. 2mm apart.
  • Do not gel-coat the tunnel inside (room only for primer and two coats of anti-fouling); anti-foul the inside of the retract housing but not the drive shaft.

PPC, Cables and Fuses

  • Circuit: battery → fuse → main switch → Proportional Power Controller (PPC) → motor. Fuse and an easily accessible manual or automatic main switch close to the positive battery terminal; slow-blow fuse able to hold the current draw for at least 5 minutes.
  • The PPC (SRP-V300 manual) is bulkhead mounted in a dry, ventilated space with at least 200mm head clearance, 150mm below and 100mm round the rest of the casing.
  • Motor lugs: M8 nut max 13Nm (9.59lb/ft), M10 nut max 23Nm (16.96lb/ft); lug faces back to back, spring washer on the outside, never washers between lugs. SRP-V300 manual: 18Nm (13.28lb/ft).
  • With the main switch off, check with an ohmmeter that neither motor terminal connects to the motor flange.
  • Retract controller: 7-31 VDC, less than 1.5 Watt standby, 40 Amp fuse, minimum 11.7 Volt (12 Volt thruster) or 23.4 Volt (24 Volt thruster) at B+/B- to deploy, -10°C to 60°C.

Values from the installation manuals; full min./recommended cable tables in mm² and AWG up to 36-45m total length are in the PDFs. The actual voltage at the motor sets rpm and thrust: bigger cables and stronger batteries give better results. Some CCA figures differ between manuals (as printed).

Retract Controller Set-up

  • Drive shaft alignment: deploy from the panel and check the actuator lever arm pointer lines up with the red mark on the nut. If not, use Service Mode and UP/DOWN to align with the calibration mark, then Sensor Calibration Mode and hold UP and DOWN until STATUS turns green, then Operation Mode.
  • DIP 1 OFF with two actuators, ON with one; DIP 2 ON only for P8 type actuators (a rattling noise when the hatch closes means it should be OFF).
  • LEDs: continuous red = over-temp, communication, relay, low voltage, position sensor, actuator power or unit failure; red fast blinking = invalid DIP setting; red short flash every 2 seconds = shaft not calibrated; continuous green = normal or service mode; flashing green = no S-Link communication.

Operation and Troubleshooting

  • Know where the main battery switch is and keep the engine running while using the thruster. Never store sails, ropes or gear in the thruster compartment. Never open an Ignition Protected assembly.
  • Main power on, then the panel; proportional thrust follows joystick travel. For manoeuvring and docking only, at no more than 4 knots.
  • The retract hatch closes with high force: take care when working around it.
  • Will not start or runs one way only: main switch on, fuses, batteries and connections. Does not stop when released, or pulsing action (solenoid failure or lock-in): hit the main switch and contact a Sleipner distributor.
  • Reduced thrust: clean growth from propeller, gear house and tunnel; check battery condition, cable size and connections.

Seasonal Maintenance

  • In the water: cables and area clean and dry, connections tight, batteries good, bolts secure, no leaks.
  • Out of the water: propellers and tunnel undamaged and secure; anti-foul propeller and gear leg (never anodes, seals or shaft); replace anodes every season or at half corroded, with thread glue on the screw.
  • Lubricate the retract drive shaft and check for excess movement; check the hatch is firmly secured.
  • Not SR80/SR100: replace the break-away rings if the actuator moves more than 3 mm by hand (keep the factory spares on board) and check the twist rings for cracks.
  • Not 300mm models: check the rubber element yearly and replace it every 2nd year. Older SRV300 models (before year 2020): check the oil reservoir.
  • Do not anti-foul or clean the SR80/SR100 retract mechanism area with chemicals, hot water or a pressure washer.
