Flow, Pressure & Hydraulic Connection

  • Hydraulic thrusters are supplied with the hydraulic motor only; the hydraulic system is the installer's responsibility and must stay within the flow and pressure limits below.
  • If an original Sleipner hydraulic system is not installed: fit an oil filter, and an oil cooler so the oil stays below 75°C (recommended operating temperature 40-60°C).
  • The valve must have flow and pressure limits set (or adjustable) within the thruster's capability. Sleipner strongly advises a shock valve set 10% - 15% above the chosen maximum pressure, to protect the system if the propellers are blocked.
  • Thruster control must be through the Sleipner S-Link system.

Installation Key Points

  • Minimum tunnel depth (propeller below the waterline when deployed): 250mm for retract systems 130 to 240, 300mm for 250 to 300. The hatch must open towards the bow; allow a minimum 100mm clear space around the thruster for moulding the SRF flange.
  • Bow: on the keel centre line, as far forward as possible. Stern: may be offset to clear propellers, trim tabs and rudders, and must not conflict with the propellers or their water trail (consult a naval architect). Never modify stiffeners or stringers.
  • Do NOT remove the red spacer block until the installation is completed.
  • Trim the SRF flange so its long edges sit flush with the hull, cutting according to the MH measurement; do not cut the flange length edge at this stage.
  • Cut the hatch at 45º on starboard, port and stern sides and 30º on the bow side – wrong angles make the hatch jam.
  • Drill four Ø11mm holes in the hatch (pillar drill, perpendicular) and countersink them; M10 countersunk bolts hold the hatch for the pre-check.
  • Pre-check in service mode (DIP switch no. 4 "SETTINGS" ON): the hatch must open without touching the hull and close flush with pressure on all contact surfaces. Grind the flange edges or raise its aft end on wedges as needed, keeping a space between twist ring and hatch.
  • Remove the gelcoat inside the hull opening in a width of 200mm and on the flange, bond, then laminate inside and outside with compatible resin and glass.
  • Seal the flange top with MS Polymer or equivalent, let it semi-cure on washer spacers, then tighten the housing bolts to 4Nm - 2,9lb/ft in a cross pattern, starting at a corner.
  • Paint the inside of the retract housing with anti-fouling but not the drive shaft; anti-foul gear leg and propeller, never anodes or propeller shaft. The propeller must turn by hand.

Electrical & 150000 Controller

  • Supply 24V DC through a 20A fuse and a switch; recommended cross section 6mm2 for cable length <10m.
  • S-Link: blue-ended BACKBONE cables, green-ended SPUR cables (one per unit), one POWER cable with a 2A fuse, END Terminator at each end; consult your distributor beyond 100 meters of backbone.
Electronic control unit 150000 Value
Supply voltage Minimum 7VDC; nominal 12/24VDC; maximum 31VDC
Minimum supply voltage for deployment 11.7VDC for 12V retract thrusters; 23.4VDC for 24V and 48V retract thrusters
Fuse 40A
Operating temperature -10°C to +60°C (14°F to +140°F)
Weight 0.5 kg/1.1 lbs
  • Drive shaft alignment: with the thruster deployed from the panel, the pointer on the actuator lever arm must align with the mark on the nut. If not, use Service Mode and the UP/DOWN buttons to align, then Sensor Calibration Mode (hold UP and DOWN until STATUS turns green), then Operation Mode.
  • DIP switch 1: OFF with two actuators, ON with one. DIP switch 2: ON only for P8 type actuators.
  • LEDs: continuous green = normal or service mode; flashing green = no S-Link communication; continuous red = over-temp, communication, relay, low voltage, sensor or actuator fault; fast-blinking red = invalid DIP switch position; short red flash every 2 seconds = shaft not calibrated.

Operation

  1. Turn on the main power switch for the thruster (always off when you are not on board).
  2. Press both "ON" buttons on the Sleipner panel together: the thruster deploys. "OFF" retracts it.
  3. Push the button or joystick in the direction you want the bow/stern to move. Proportional control: a slight movement gives minimal thrust, the end stop gives maximum thrust.
  4. Release shortly before the boat reaches position – it keeps moving. Bow and stern together, same direction = move sideways; opposite directions = spin on the boat's axis.
  • Forward or reverse speed must not exceed 4 knots when operated; above 1-2 kn the thruster has little steering effect.
  • Hold function (if fitted): push the button for the direction to hold; + or - increases or decreases the holding force.
  • Two panels giving conflicting directions at the same time: the thruster will not run. Stop and switch off if the thruster stops giving thrust while running.
  • Never run the thruster out of water or near people or animals in the water. Use caution around the hatch: the retract mechanism closes with high force.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Seasonal service

  • In water: area around the thruster clean and dry, no water or oil leaks; electrical connections clean and tight.
  • Out of water: propeller(s) and tunnel undamaged, propellers secure; all components fastened; tunnel and gear leg cleaned of growth.
  • Anti-foul propeller and gear leg every season – never the anode, seals or propeller shaft, and keep paint out of the gap between propeller and gear leg.
  • Change the anode every season or when half eroded; thread glue or sealant on the screw.
  • External oil tank: check the oil level stays the same.
  • Retract mechanism: re-lubricate with waterproof grease if necessary; replace the break-away rings if there is over 3 mm movement; check the rubber element annually and replace every 2nd year; check the twist rings. No anti-fouling, chemicals, hot water or high-pressure jet on the marked area.

Troubleshooting

  • Motor runs but no thrust: check propellers are fitted and fastened and the shaft is undamaged; on counter-rotating models check LH and RH propellers are on the correct side; check the flexible coupling and gears.
  • Reduced performance: clean growth and barnacles from propeller, gear house and tunnel; check oil pressure and levels.
  • Ignition Protected thruster with a motor problem: contact your dealer.
  • S-Link panels display faults on the panel; see the control panel manual for the full fault code list.
