Depth, Cowls and Keeping It Dry

Depth & Cowls

  • Install as deep as possible on the transom: no air drawn from the surface, maximum water pressure.
  • Waterline to top of tunnel: at least 1x the tunnel diameter for best performance; absolute minimum 1/2 x the diameter (see WD in the tables).
  • Shallow drafts or obstructions (trim tabs, jets, surface drives): fit stern thruster cowls. Less efficient than a deep installation, better than a shallow one without cowls.
  • Cowls angled out of horizontal must be installed deeper to avoid air entry.

Dry Compartment & Support

  • Motor and solenoids are not waterproof: build a dry, sealed compartment – seal drain holes into it, drain surrounding areas away, isolate it from propeller and rudder shafts, and make sure a failed bilge pump cannot flood it (a self-activating bilge pump with alarm is recommended).
  • Route the control cables high so they stay dry.
  • Always support the motor so its weight does not stress or twist the bracket/tunnel joint – the tunnel can crack over time and let water in.

Bolt-On, Mould-In and Split Installation

Bolt-On

  1. Make the tunnel flange flush on the transom (keep the minimum transom thickness).
  2. Hold the tunnel horizontal, mark the bolt holes, remove it and mark the internal centre diameter.
  3. Cut the centre opening and the bolt holes; seal the cut areas with gel-coat or similar inside and out.
  4. Install the gear leg per the thruster guide (fit the oil lead now if used).
  5. Seal the flange and bolt holes with an MS-Polymer or polyurethane compound; fit bolts with A4 lock nuts and large A4 washers inside and out (bolts, washers and nuts not included).
  6. Install the motor support.

Mould-In (GRP tunnels only)

  1. Cut off the bolting section of the tunnel mould and grind the gel-coat inside and out.
  2. Mark and cut the transom opening; grind the transom gel-coat at least 10cm around it, inside and out.
  3. Bond the tunnel horizontally with multiple layers of mat inside and out, checking material compatibility, without reducing the internal diameter.
  4. Gel-coat the bonded areas, install the gear leg and the motor support.

Split Tunnel

  1. Flange flush on the transom; mark and cut the opening and bolt holes; seal as for bolt-on.
  2. Install the gear leg and the motor bracket with its included metal supports (no extra support frame needed).
  3. Seal flange and bolt holes; fit washer and locknut (or counter nut) and tighten to 20Nm.
  4. Fit the outer tunnel half with sealant, making sure the locking tabs engage.
  5. Bolt diameter: measurement B in the tunnel table.

A boatbuilder or naval architect must approve any customisation of the transom.
