OWNER'S MANUAL

Run a 24V Sleipner Side-Power thruster on a 12V boat with the Sleipner series/parallel switch box (voltage conversion unit, SE120, SE130, SE150, SE170): how it works, battery and cable minimums, installation steps and the bow-plus-stern layout.

How the Series/Parallel Box Works

At Rest

  • Batt.1 (a standard boat bank, preferably the start bank) and the extra Batt.2 sit in parallel, so Batt.2 is charged by the boat's normal 12V charge system – no extra charger needed – and adds capacity to Batt.1.
  • There is no power on the thruster main positive lead until the control panel activates the thruster.
  • The box supplies the thruster control system and panel through its grey and black leads to the control side of the thruster solenoid.

Running

  • On a run signal the box solenoids switch first, putting Batt.2 in series with Batt.1: 24V on the thruster main cable. The thruster main contactors only engage after this.
  • While running only Batt.1 is charged; Batt.2 draws on its own capacity (Batt.1 = 0 - 12V, Batt.2 = the 12V - 24V portion).
  • Two versions were designed for the high current of an electric thruster: one for the SE170TC and one for the SP240TC.

Planning Rules

  • Batt.2 may have no connections other than those in this manual.
  • Install Batt.2 and the box as close as possible to the Batt.1 bank. The box is splash proof but must be mounted dry, where it can never be submerged.
  • Heavy duty power cables for all battery and thruster connections, including between batteries and box: minimum 70mm2 / OOO, or larger for the length (see the thruster manual; listed lengths are + and - cable combined). The wiring diagram gives absolute minimums of 70mm² for SE170 and 95mm² for SP240.
  • Fit main power switches in the main positive cable of each bank and a slow-type fuse (400 to 600A) at each battery; show the owner where the switches are.
  • Electronically controlled engines (MMC / Volvo EDC / Morse etc.) must not be powered from the thruster battery – give them a small separate battery.
Thruster Batt.1 min. Batt.2 min. Slow fuse / main switch rating
SE170TC 600CCA din 600CCA din 400A for 10 minutes
SE210TC 750CCA din 750CCA din 550A for 10 minutes
SP240TC 800CCA din 800CCA din 600A for 10 minutes

CCA din = Cold Cranking Amps by DIN. Conversions: DIN = SAE & BCA / 1,9 (e.g. 800 CCA BCA = 421 CCA DIN); DIN = IEC / 1,3. These are minimums – bigger batteries and cables mean less voltage drop and more thrust.

Installation Steps

  1. Install the thruster per its own manual but use the wiring diagrams in this manual instead of the thruster's; size the main cable for the length per the thruster manual.
  2. Bolt the box to a bulkhead, accessible and as close to both battery banks as possible, cable openings facing down.
  3. Connect the heavy main cables, main battery switches and fuses as in the wiring diagram; label every cable at both ends and fit the rubber seals around the cables and in the box.
  4. Check the main cable wiring again.
  5. Extend the box's 2-lead wire (grey and black) to the lower connectors of the thruster main solenoid contactor (existing red/grey and red/blue leads per FIG 5).
  6. Connect the control panel(s) directly to the thruster as in a normal installation.
  7. Stern thrusters: move the electronic control box away from the thruster and seal the compartment from bilge water, as in the stern thruster manual.

Bow and Stern Thruster on One Boat

  • Treat bow and stern as separate electrical systems: each thruster needs its own series/parallel box, its own Batt.2 and its own 2-lead control cable.
  • Batt.1 can be common to both if it has the capacity (minimum x 2,5) – the example diagram (drawing S-9957) shows start batteries of min. 1200 / 1600 CCA and Batt.2 banks of min. 600/800 CCA each.
  • The Batt.2 banks for bow and stern cannot be connected to anything else. 70 mm2 is the absolute minimum, also on short internal wiring between batteries and box.
  • Charge through the normal connections to battery bank 1 (start bank).
