Quick Windlasses: Which Model Fits Your Boat, Chain and Voltage
Quick is the Italian maker whose windlass range runs from the 150 W Genius GP2 for small boats to the 3500 W Duke for large yachts. This collection lists every combination we carry as its own listing, so the title tells you the model, power, voltage, orientation, gypsy and chain size and chain standard. Sort the choice in this order: horizontal or vertical (how it fits your deck and locker), power for your boat size, then the gypsy for your chain, then the controls.
Horizontal Windlasses (Motor Lies Along the Deck)
- Genius GP2: 150, 250, 500 and 800 W, 12V (the 800 W also in 24V), with gypsy-only or gypsy-and-drum versions. Chain 6 mm, 8 mm, 1/4 in and 5/16 in. Quick's recommended boat lengths: 6 to 8 m (20 to 26 ft) for the 150 W (GP2 500), 6 to 9 m (20 to 30 ft) for the 250 W, 6 to 10 m (20 to 33 ft) for the 500 W and 8 to 13 m (26 to 43 ft) for the 800 W. There are automatic Free Fall versions of the 250, 500 and 800 W. Start with the 150 W 8 mm.
- Hector HC3: 700, 1000 and 1500 W in 12V and 24V, with chain 8 mm or 10 mm and rope on the same gypsy. Quick's boat lengths: 7 to 10 m (23 to 33 ft), 10 to 13 m (33 to 43 ft) and 12 to 15 m (39 to 50 ft). Listed with gypsy only, gypsy and drum, and DX Drum versions. The listing describes an emergency manual lift system and a manual free-fall system, for example the 700 W 12V 8 mm.
- Eagle E1 and E3: Eagle E1 is 300 and 500 W, 12V, for 6 mm (1/4 in) chain. Eagle E3 is 700, 1000 and 1400 W in 12V and 24V for 8 and 10 mm chain, with Quick lengths of 7 to 10 m (23 to 33 ft), 10 to 13 m (33 to 43 ft) and 12 to 15 m (39 to 49 ft); see the E3 700 W 24V.
- Balder BL3 and BL2: the BL3 is a 1500 W horizontal windlass; the BL2 Free Fall (600 W) is the automatic free-fall version.
Vertical Windlasses (Motor Below Deck)
Vertical windlasses put the motor under the deck, so only the gypsy and drum sit on top. That is the choice for boats short of deck space, and it is how most of the larger Quick units are built.
- Prince DP1, DP2, DP2E and DP3, Rider R1 and R3: the entry and mid range. Prince DP1 is 300 W (6 mm, 1/4 in); DP2 runs from 300 to 1000 W for 6 to 8 mm and 1/4 and 5/16 in chain, such as the DP2 500 W 12V 8 mm; DP3 runs from 700 to 1500 W and Rider R3 from 700 to 1400 W, both for 8 and 10 mm chain (DP3 700 W, R3 700 W). Rider R1 is a 500 W unit for 1/4 in chain.
- Aleph AL3: 700, 1000 and 1500 W in 12V and 24V for 8 and 10 mm chain, for example the 1000 W 12V 10 mm.
- Dylan DR4 and DH4: 1500, 1700 and 2000 W, for 10 mm and 12 mm chain. Quick's boat lengths are 10 to 16 m (33 to 53 ft) for the 1500 W, 14 to 18 m (46 to 59 ft) for the 1700 W and 15 to 20 m (49 to 66 ft) for the 2000 W. Quick describes a stainless steel AISI 316 base with anodised aluminium, an IP67 motor on the 1500 and 1700 W (IP66 on the 2000 W), an emergency manual lift, a manual free-fall system and an inspection lid. Start with the DR4 1500 W 12V 10 mm or read how to choose a Quick Dylan windlass.
- Dave DV5: 1700 W (12V and 24V), 2000, 2300 and 3000 W (24V) and a 3000 W 230/400V AC version, for 10, 12 and 14 mm chain, in standard and left-hand (LH) versions. See the DV5 1700 W 24V 12 mm.
- Regal RG5 and Duke DK6: the heavy end. Regal RG5 is 1700 and 2000 W in 24V (plus a hydraulic version); Duke DK6 is 3000 and 3500 W in 24V for 12 mm chain, in standard and LH versions, for example the DK6 3000 W 24V 12 mm.
Rope-Only Windlasses and Capstans
- Rope-only windlasses: Balder BL2R at 600, 900 and 1200 W (12V), which Quick lists for rope and which the listing says suits a stern installation, and the PT R-G rope-roll winches at 150, 250 and 350 W, which the listing describes for pontoon boats and boats with little space, such as the PT R-G 150 W.
- Drum-only models (no gypsy): Thor (700, 1000 and 1400 W), Totem TM3 (500 and 800 W) and Tumbler TB2 to TB6 (500 to 3000 W). The listings are drum-only, with no gypsy; Quick groups the Tumbler and Totem with its warping winches. Use them to haul ropes, and read the product page before you count on one for chain. See the Thor 700 W and the Tumbler TB3 700 W.
Choosing the Gypsy, Chain and Hand
- Match the gypsy to your chain, not just the diameter. The suffix in the title (DIN 766, ISO, G4 or BBB) is the chain standard the gypsy is cut for, so check both the diameter and the standard of the chain on your boat. Our guide on matching a windlass gypsy to your chain and rode goes through it.
- Gypsy only or gypsy and drum. A gypsy-only windlass handles the anchor rode; adding a drum gives you a rope drum on top for warping lines.
- Left-hand (LH) versions. Standard listings are right-hand chain fall; LH listings are left-hand, which can suit a particular locker layout. LH versions are listed for the Dave, Regal, Duke and Balder BL3.
- Free fall. Hector, Dylan and the Genius GP2 500 list a manual free-fall system; the Genius GP2 Free Fall and Balder BL2 Free Fall versions are the automatic free-fall ones.
- Voltage. Pick 12V or 24V to match the boat's DC system; the Regal and Duke are 24V, and so is the Dave from 2000 W up.
Controls, Contactors and Accessories
The collection also holds the parts that run a Quick windlass: HRC hand remote controls (1002, 1004, 1006 and 1008, with LED versions), RRC radio remote controls with pocket and handheld transmitters and receivers, 900-series up and down footswitches, an 800 up/down control board, the T6215, T6315 and T6415 150 A contactor units (12V and 24V versions) and a T6411-12 reversing unit, the QNC chain counter and an OSP sensor kit, and a three-contact IP67 connector. Examples: the HRC 1002 remote, the RRC P902 pocket transmitter, the T6315-12 contactor unit, the 900 footswitch and the QNC flush-mount chain counter. Several windlass listings (Hector, Dylan, Thor) say the windlass is sold with its solenoid unit and clutch handle; check each page for what is in the box. Chain and hawse pipes are in Quick anchor and mooring chains and Quick chain hooks, pipes and stoppers.
Who It's For
Cruisers replacing or upgrading a windlass on boats from about 6 m (20 ft) upwards, refit projects that need to match gypsy, voltage and deck layout, and owners moving to a vertical windlass to free deck space. Frequently Asked Questions
Which Quick windlass do I need for my boat length?
Quick gives a boat-length band for each size. For the Genius GP2 it runs from 6 to 8 m (150 W) up to 8 to 13 m (800 W); for the Hector HC3 and Eagle E3, 7 to 10 m at 700 W up to about 12 to 15 m at 1400 or 1500 W; for the Dylan, 10 to 16 m at 1500 W up to 15 to 20 m at 2000 W. Treat the band as a starting point: displacement, rode weight and anchor size move it. Our windlass sizing guide and pulling power guide cover the calculation.
Should I choose a horizontal or vertical Quick windlass?
A horizontal windlass keeps the motor on the deck beside the gypsy; the Hector listing describes it as suiting boats with limited space in the anchor locker. A vertical windlass puts the motor below the deck, leaving only the gypsy and drum on top, which saves deck space. Our guide horizontal or vertical windlass compares them.
What do DIN 766, ISO, G4 and BBB mean in the title?
They name the chain standard the gypsy is made for. Match both your chain's diameter and its standard to the gypsy; a gypsy cut for the wrong standard will not seat the links properly. If you are not sure what chain you have, check the markings or the supplier's data before ordering.
What is the difference between "Gypsy Only" and "Gypsy + Drum"?
Both have a gypsy for the anchor rode. The gypsy-and-drum version adds a drum on top that you can use to haul on ropes, such as mooring lines. If you only handle the anchor, gypsy only is enough.
Does a Quick windlass come with a remote, switch or contactor?
It depends on the model. Quick supplies the Dylan with a contactor unit and handle, and several listings say the windlass is sold with the solenoid unit, clutch handle and mounting hardware. Up and down switches, remotes, footswitches and chain counters are optional accessories; they are listed in this collection so you can add them.
