Traditional Wheels and Hubs (pp. 2-3)

• All these wheel hubs have a 1" straight bore, 2 3/8" long, 1/4" keyway. BR = polished bronze hub, CH = chrome plated bronze hub.
• Commercial bronze wheel, 19"/48 cm tip to tip, 5"/12.7 cm teak handles, hub 1 1/8"/2.9 cm thick: tapered bore #971-19-750T (3/4"/1.9 cm taper) or straight bore #971-19-100S.
• Wheel adapters #698 (brass, stainless locking pin, 1/4" key) fit Edson wheels to other steerers, for wheels up to 30"; give the make and model of your steerer. Most popular: #698-A-306-1 (3 1/2" taper per foot, 5/8-18 thread, standard Morse taper), #698-A-306-2 (3/4" taper per foot, 1/2-20 thread, standard Teleflex taper), #698-A-338 (3/4-16 thread, slight taper), #698-A-340 (3/4" straight shaft), #698-A-639 (3/4" taper, 5/8-18 thread).
• Wheel nuts #673ST (316 stainless) or #673BR (brass) in 1"-14 (standard since 1979), 5/8"-18 and 3/4"-10 threads. Teak handles with 3/8"-16 carriage bolts: #882-350, -400, -450, -500.

Rack and Pinion and Worm Gear Steerers (pp. 4-7)

• Rack and pinion: top of the wheel about 32" (81.3 cm) above the cockpit sole; “A” dimension = rudderpost centreline to the aft side of the wheel (allow for the wheel box face, an autopilot and a brake – the #783 brake needs 2 1/2"). Monthly: #30 motor oil on the shaft bearings, #827 Teflon lubricant on gear teeth and adjusting arm contact point; universal joints packed in grease and booted.
• Transom-hung: #341-9 for boats up to 38' (1.6 turns through 70°; with a 22" wheel equal to a 7 1/2' tiller); heavy duty #341-14 for boats up to 48', rudderstocks up to 3 1/2" (2.8 turns through 80°, about a 15' tiller). Size = radius + rudderstock thickness (14-225 = 14" radius for a 2 1/4" stock); if in doubt order the next size up and shim the jaws.
• Aft mounted for inboard rudders: #343-1 (aft raked posts 1" to 2", max. key 3/8", needs at least 12" (30.5 cm) aft of the post, standard “A” 15"); #344-1 for severely raked posts, with #679 universal and two #629 bearings (30° adjustment).
• Forward mounted for inboard rudders: #347-9 for boats up to 38' (1.8 turns through 80°), #347-14 for 38' to 48' (three turns through 90°).
• Worm steerers: mounted at 90° to the rudderpost; top of the wheel rim 31" (79 cm) to 33" (84 cm) above the cockpit floor; check flange alignment with a .002" (.05 mm) feeler gauge. Maintenance: #30 oil on pivot points, water pump grease on the worm and the centre grease fitting.

Simplex #370 (worm aft of the post; size 00 needs at least 14 1/4" (36.2 cm) aft of the post, size 1 at least 19" (48.3 cm)), #371 (same with universal and extra bearing), #372 (worm forward of the post, from 5" – 6" aft), #373; Meteor #390-1 (the text gives 128 lbs (58.1 kg) against 120 lbs in the table, as printed); Robinson #380-2 (needs at least 35" aft) and #382-2. If in doubt, if the boat is very heavy or will sail offshore, go one size up; your naval architect must approve the final selection. Wheel shafts fit 1" bore, 2 3/8" hub, 1/4" keyway wheels.

Stuffing Box / Bearing #697 (p. 10)

A rudderpost bearing with an above-the-waterline stuffing box; ‘A’ is bored +.03" over the rudderpost size for clearance. Glass it to the top of the tube with alternating mat and cloth. Rudder roller bearings #954 (1" to 3 1/2" posts) and bronze or chrome tiller head fittings #965BR-100 / #965CH-100 (1 1/2" tillers, 1" posts) are on the same page.

Leather and Deck Accessories (pp. 11, 13)

• Each spreader boot kit: two pre-punched Dove Gray leather boots, heavy waxed polyester thread, hand-stitching needle and instructions.
• Leather turnbuckle covers (Dove Grey, hook-and-loop): small #1405-12 for 5/16" (1" × 12"), medium #1405-14 for 1/2" (1 1/2" × 14"), large #1405-24 for 5/8" (1 3/4" × 24"). Shackle pulls #1404-5 (pack of 10). Chafing leather #858TAN / #858GRAY in 2 1/2, 5 1/2, 11 and 22 sq. ft.
• One-Step boarding step (cast aluminum, white urethane, hangs from the lifeline gate stanchions, 6 ft. braided line with stainless snap shackles, 5 lb (2.3 kg)): #520-14 with line, #520-14LL without.
• Stern rail outboard motor mount, motors up to 15 hp or 100 lbs/45 kg, 10 lb (4.5 kg): #521-100ST for 1" railing (polished 316 stainless bracket on UV-stable poly board), #521-125AL for 1 1/4" railing (anodized aluminum bracket, stainless U-bolt).
• Bronze outboard brackets for dinghies and small sailboats, outboards up to 4 HP: #951-010 straight transom (10°), #951-3545 angled transom (35° – 45°).
