Lewmar Windlass Selection Guide

How to Choose a Lewmar Windlass

Read the chart like this

  • Find your boat's length overall on the chart, then pick a model whose bar covers it.
  • The boat length assumes average displacement. On a heavy-displacement boat, consider the next model up.
  • Displacement, windage and anchor weight all count, not only length.
  • The lighter shading at the right end of each bar is the upper limit of that model. If in doubt, move up a model.

Then match the gypsy to your chain

  • Vertical, large vertical and horizontal windlasses are charted separately.
  • The gypsy must match your chain: check D (wire diameter), P (pitch, inside link length) and W (outside link width) in the chain guide below.
  • Chain standards with the same nominal size differ in pitch and width (e.g. 10 mm DIN 766 vs 10 mm ISO 4565), so quote the standard, not just the size.
  • The charts below are Lewmar's own selection charts, reproduced from the PDF.

Large Vertical Windlasses

In the PDF every metric label from 165 ft to 245 ft is printed as "50.3 M" (one as "503 M"); use the ft scale.

Horizontal Windlasses

S900 and S2000 are stern windlasses.
