|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic | 55.9 m/min | 12.3 m/min | 315 kg | 1450 kg |
Hydraulic line speed at 20 l/min (5.28 gal/min) oil flow; max load at 130 bar at 20 l/min. Data based on oil at 35 mm²/s (165 SUS) and 50°C (120°F), measured at the motor ports.
Installation
- Flat area of deck, reinforced if needed to take at least twice the MWL.
- Five Ø8.2 mm holes on a Ø150 mm bolt circle plus an Ø80 mm cut-out for the motor; five M8 bolts (not supplied by Harken).
- A4 stainless bolts only (DIN 267 part 11). No countersunk bolts.
- Sheet entry angle 8° ±2°, with the drive gear where the sheet enters the drum.
- Fill the holes with marine sealant and keep the base drain channels clear.
- Check below deck for the flange, motor, wiring or hydraulic lines before drilling.
Getting to the Base
- Procedure 1 (socket-head bolts): pull out the disconnect rod; unscrew the central screw, 2 Nm (18 in-lb); slide off socket and cover (mind the o-ring); remove the three screws, 4 Nm (35 in-lb); rotate and lift off the self-tailing arm; lift off the drum.
- Procedure 2 (hex-head bolts, not for BBB / CCC): unclip the skirt with a screwdriver, fit five M8 hex-head bolts, then press the skirt back until it clips onto the base.
- Position the self-tailing arm so the tail leads into the cockpit. Drilling template on harken.com.
Motor and Electrical
Motor Installation
- Switch off the power before installing or servicing the winch.
- The gearmotor is IP54: mount it below deck, dry, protected and where its condition can be checked.
- The motor can be coupled to the winch in different positions: check the space below deck first.
- Flange: six M6 precote-coated screws, 8 Nm (71 in-lb). Check the seals above and below the flange.
- Reduction gear and motor: two screws, 8 Nm (71 in-lb); align the flange.
- Before sailing, fit a lock-in handle and check the disconnect rod disconnects the gearbox.
- Tools: 5 mm hex key, 6 mm hex key (vertical motor), 10 mm hex key (hydraulic motor), two 13 mm wrenches.
Electrical
- The Harken Dual Function Control Box is mandatory for every model; follow its own manual for wiring.
- Cable terminals go between nut and lock nut; hold the nut with one spanner, tighten with a second, never turn the central spindle.
- Terminal torque no greater than 10 Nm (88 in-lb).
- Contact sequence: nut – cable terminal – self-locking washer – lock nut.
- Third-party electrification kits void the Harken Limited Worldwide Warranty.

| 50.2 – 48V | HCP1717 | 80A |
Hydraulic connections
- Two high-pressure lines (in/out, depending on the direction of rotation) plus a low-pressure drain line back to the tank.
- Input/output thread: G 1/2, depth 15 mm. Drain thread: G 1/4, depth 12 mm.
- The motor uses an open centre valve. See the Hydraulic Power Unit and Control Box and Digital System Switch manuals.
Maintenance
Routine
- Wash with fresh water frequently, and after every use.
- Keep teak cleaners and caustic products off anodized, chromed and plastic parts.
- No solvents, polishes or abrasive pastes on logos, stickers, anodized, chromed or plastic surfaces.
- Inspect visually at the start and end of every season.
- Full overhaul, clean and lubricate at least every 12 months; replace worn parts with original parts only.
Overhaul
- Tools: medium flat screwdriver, 6 mm hex key, brush, rags.
- Clean metal parts with a residue-free degreaser; rinse plastic parts in fresh water.
- Check gear and ring-gear teeth, roller bearings and cages, pins and pawls for wear or corrosion.
- Grease gears, pins and teeth lightly with Harken grease, applied with a brush.
- Oil the pawls and springs only. Never grease the pawls: excess grease on the pawls compromises safety.
| Fastener | Torque |
|---|---|
| Central screw | 2 Nm (18 in-lb) |
| Self-tailing arm screws (3) | 4 Nm (35 in-lb) |
| Housing hex screws (5) | 20 Nm (177 in-lb) |
| Jaw screws (4) | 4 Nm (35 in-lb) |
| Motor flange screws (6) | 8 Nm (71 in-lb) |
| Motor terminals | max 10 Nm (88 in-lb) |
Switch off the power first. Before refitting the central screw, check the o-ring in the socket assembly and grease it. Peeler between the jaws with TOP facing up, aligned with the stripper arm.
