Selden Nail Terminals for Furling Cable — Owner's Manual

Choosing the Terminal

Designed and tested for Selden anti-torsion (AT) furling cables; other cables can be used but performance is not guaranteed by Selden. NT terminals connect directly to a CX/CXr or CXe unit or via a tack swivel adaptor, and can take a tack swivel. NTL terminals have a lashing end for soft attachment to the sail and/or furling unit. Bodies are 6000-series aluminium, hard-coat anodized; nails are 17.4 PH stainless steel, pressed or hammered right through the cable.

OSD = one step-down: a version for each furling unit, for Code sails with a smaller AT cable. The SWL of these configurations does not correspond to the SWL of the furling unit. For top-down furling of an asymmetric spinnaker or gennaker always follow Selden's standard AT cable dimensions – OSD terminals are not to be used there.

CCL = cable length deducted per terminal; F = terminal depth (insertion mark).

Assembly

Kit: nail terminal (1) + nails (quantity depends on size). Tools: thin plastic tape (not cloth), sharp breakaway knife, pen or marker, measuring tape, hammer / press / bench vice, wood or plastic support. A vice or press makes it easier; if hammering, hold the nail with pliers until it has entered the cable – the cable is tough and the nail can bounce back.

  1. Wrap ~1.5 turns of thin plastic tape hard around the cable ~20mm from the end. Cut cleanly through the middle of the tape – all around first, then through the core. Leave the tape on.
  2. Verify the finished length (L) of the stay and deduct CCL for each terminal (tables above). Mark the cutting length (CL) with tape and repeat step 1. Leave the tape on.
  3. Mark the terminal depth F with tape.
  4. Insert the cable: it must bottom out in the terminal with the marking tape level with the top of the terminal.
  5. Support the terminal on a firm surface, with plastic or wood to protect it.
  6. With the cable bottomed out, fit a nail in the first hole, holding it square with pliers for the first blows. The first blow must be hard. Do not pre-drill. The nail head must be fully seated. Repeat for the remaining nails. Wear eye protection.
  7. With a vise or press use protection pads on the jaws and make sure each nail is square to the terminal before pressing.

Anti-corrosive compound or caulking under the nail heads protects against corrosion; the receiving holes on the far side can also be filled after assembly. Wipe off excess.

Maintenance & Warranty

  • Avoid storing the sail damp for long periods. Rinse the nail terminals and tack swivel with fresh water and let dry.
  • The terminal can be taken apart: drive out the nails with a hammer and punch. Never re-use the nails.
  • Selden warranty: 2 years, valid only if assembled, operated and maintained per the manual and not loaded beyond the published figures; void if repaired or modified by anyone other than Selden or an authorized dealer.

Fitting the tack swivel

  1. Insert the hex key in the hole in the tack ring and find the set screw.
  2. Turn it a couple of turns clockwise until 2–3 threads are visible; add a drop of thread lock.
  3. Back the set screw off until flush with the hub.
  4. Slide the tack swivel over the nail terminal, find the set-screw hole in the terminal and tighten the set screw fully.
