Selden CXr — Selection Guide

Sails the CXr Furls

Sail Set-up
Code 0 Straight luff under tension, mid girth <75% of foot. AT-cable in the luff is the "axle" between drum and halyard swivel; furls bottom-up. Best at apparent wind angles between 40° and 90°.
Cableless Code 0 Special load-bearing luff instead of an AT-cable; Selden supplies tackboards and headboards to fit the CXr unit and halyard swivel.
Jib 0 Light-wind alternative to a jib; good upwind performance in winds up to approximately 6 knots, used from close-hauled until you can switch to a gennaker or spinnaker.
Asymmetric spinnaker Mid girth >75% of foot, luff at least 2% longer than the leech. Furled top-down with a Tack Swivel Adaptor; the AT-cable carries the drum rotation to the head. Apparent wind angles between 90° and 120°; tighten the halyard somewhat before furling and unfurling.
Staysail Set inside a gennaker, spinnaker, Code 0 or Jib 0. Also steadies the boat downwind in heavy winds when tightly sheeted.

Select the Right Model

For Code 0, Jib 0 and staysails use a Basic Kit. For asymmetric spinnakers add a Tack Swivel Adaptor to the Basic Kit. CXr basic kits and tack swivel adaptors come with a 5-year warranty.

The CXr Ratchet

The ratcheting drum stops the sail unfurling unintentionally while hoisting and lets you pause midway while furling a large top-down sail. It works in both directions and adapts to the direction you pull.

  1. Before unfurling, unlock the ratchet with a short, distinct pull on the furling line in the direction you want the drum to spin.
  2. Looking at the drum head-on from aft: to spin it clockwise, pull the line from the starboard side; to spin it counterclockwise, pull from the port side.
  • Furling unit: composite for low weight, metal "teeth" on the line driver, polished cast stainless line guide, wedge to separate the line, fork with spring-loaded lock and captive pin for thimble, tack swivel adapter or nail terminal; Duplex steel and machined aluminium structure; sealed steel bearings.
  • Halyard swivel: same spring-loaded lock and captive pin, sealed steel bearing, integrated rubber fender.

Ratchet prevention plugs

Install them in the furling unit to inactivate the ratchet, for example on a race-boat staysail that is used intermittently and hoisted rapidly.

Nail Terminals and Tack Swivels

Machined anodized aluminium terminal; the AT-cable goes into the female fitting and hardened stainless nails are driven through terminal and cable (vise or hammer). The nails leave the Dyneema® fibres undamaged, so load capacity and torsional rigidity are kept.

Code 0 Halyard with 2:1 Purchase

To reach the luff tension a Code 0 needs, the halyard load must be higher than normal halyard boxes and stoppers can handle. Arrange a 2:1 purchase: fix the dead end of the halyard in the mast and run it through a block attached to the halyard swivel. The position on the mast must be specified by Selden; in most cases Code 0 sails are hoisted lower than gennakers and spinnakers.
