Chain is drawn as pitch P = 3 × D and width W = 3.5 × D. For combined rope/chain rodes use three-strand rope only (no multi-plait) and join it to the chain with a tight, tapered back splice that flows freely through the windlass.

Planning the Location

  • Rode and bow roller centre lines must match; the rode centre line should not be more than 6° above or below the gipsy centre line.
  • Leave at least 300 mm (12") between the underside of the deck and the stored rode.
  • Uneven decks need a mounting pad; reinforce lightweight decks. Maximum deck thickness 70 mm (2-3/4").
  • Allow for 360° rotation of the operating handle and for a chain pipe if required.
  • Do NOT use a permanent adhesive/sealant to install the windlass.
  • In the box: windlass, socket screw key, 2 templates, 4 studs M8 (ISO) with nuts and washers. Extra: circuit breaker, cable, terminals, sealant, chain pipe.
  • Tools: 60 mm (2-3/8") hole saw, 54 mm (2-1/8") hole saw (chain only), 9.5 mm (3/8") and 6 mm (1/4") drills, 2 × 13 mm and 8 mm A/F spanners, crimping tool. Chain pipes: flat 2417201 (rope/chain, 3 mm drill) or hooded 2417202 (chain only, 7 mm drill).

Fitting

  • Position and fix the template in line with the rode centre line; drill the stud holes.
  • Cut the 60 mm hole for the windlass (the fitting page prints 2-3/4", the tools page 2-3/8"; as printed) and check the windlass fits.
  • Smooth and seal the hole edges with marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy.
  • Fit the studs by locking two nuts together on each stud, screw them in firmly, then remove the nuts.
  • Fit the windlass to the deck, partially tighten the nuts, let the sealant set, then tighten fully.
  • If necessary trim the fore studs so they cannot snag the rode.
  • Loading the rode: feed the rope/chain into the entry hole until it drops into the locker, tie the end off to a strong point, wrap the rode around the gipsy and power-load the rest.

Wiring & Cable Sizing

  • Keep the windlass wiring separate from other wiring and connect it to the starter battery where possible. Use marine grade copper wire with crimped terminals.
  • The control box/solenoid and circuit breaker must be kept dry. All switches are wired in parallel.
  • If the windlass runs the wrong way, swap the cable connections at the windlass motor. Add a grounding strap between the mounting studs and an earthing point if necessary.
  • Install to USCG, ABYC, NMMA or other local regulations. Check that the windlass runs the correct way from every switch and causes no electro-magnetic interference.
  • Switch wire: 1.5 mm² (14 AWG). Switch feed: 3 amp blow fuse (customer supply); the power-reversing contactor/control box carries a 0.5A fuse.
Total cable length 16 mm² (6 AWG) 25 mm² (4 AWG) 35 mm² (2 AWG) 50 mm² (1/0 AWG)
12V – 15.0 m (50 ft) 27.0 m (90 ft) 30.0 m (100 ft)
24V 15.0 m (50 ft) 30.0 m (100 ft) – –

Total length = A + B + C + D (single direction) or A + B + C + D + E + F (power reversing): battery to windlass and windlass back to battery.

Operation

Safety and Use

  • Check for swimmers; keep clear of the moving rode. Use the UP or DOWN button.
  • Do not overload the windlass; avoid stalling it.
  • When riding at anchor, secure the rode to a suitable independent strong point, and secure the anchor to the bow fitting to prevent accidental release.
  • The splice should not be in the windlass with the anchor raised.
  • Isolate the windlass at the circuit breaker/isolator when not in use. Check the clutch nut regularly and always remove the handle after tightening it.

Warping

  • Before warping, secure the rode to an independent strong point, whether the gipsy is in use or not.
  • Disengage the clutch: insert the handle in the clutch nut (part 44), turn 2 full turns anti-clockwise, remove the handle.
  • Wrap at least 3 coils loosely around the drum, start the motor and tension the rope gently.
  • If the warping speed is too fast, ease the tension. Never wrap chain around the drum.
  • When finished, re-engage the clutch tightly so the anchor cannot release.

Manual Recovery – Gipsy/Drum

  • Isolate the windlass at the circuit breaker/isolator.
  • Insert the socket screw key (75) into the clutch nut (44) until it engages the socket screw (59); turn anti-clockwise one revolution to slacken it.
  • Insert the handle and recover the anchor by turning clockwise.
  • Remove the handle, insert the key and turn clockwise to retighten the socket screw.

Manual Recovery – Gipsy Only

  • Isolate the windlass at the circuit breaker/isolator.
  • Remove the hole plug (77) and insert the socket screw key (75) until it engages the socket screw (76); turn anti-clockwise one revolution.
  • Insert the handle and recover the anchor by turning clockwise.
  • Remove the handle, retighten the socket screw clockwise with the key and replace the hole plug.

Once the anchor is recovered, secure the anchor and rode to an independent strong point. Neither the windlass nor its deck mounting is designed for anchoring loads in storm conditions.

Servicing

Regularly

  • Wash the windlass down with fresh water.
  • Check the clutch nut for tightness.
  • Check the mounting bolts and nuts for tightness and condition.
  • Examine all electrical connections for corrosion; clean and lightly grease.

Annually

  • Check the electric cables for damage; repair or renew as required.
  • Strip the above-deck components, clean and lightly grease.

Removing the Windlass

  • Isolate the windlass at the circuit breaker/isolator and disconnect the motor cables from the wiring loom.
  • Remove the 4 nuts and washers from under the deck, lift the windlass off and take it to the workshop.
  • Remove the above-deck components. Installation is the reverse.
