Use only the genuine Lewmar replacement rope kit: rope specification is critical to correct spooling.

Planning

  • Uneven deck: fit a mounting pad to take up camber or sheer. Thin, foam- or balsa-cored decks need reinforcement to spread the load.
  • Centre-line of the anchor shank / bow roller must coincide with the windlass housing centre-line; lead from the roller must come back horizontally.
  • The drum must be in line with and centred on the guide roller or hawse pipe for an even wrap.
  • The gearbox-to-drum orientation can be rotated to suit the install.
  • Check below-deck clearance for bolts and wiring before cutting.

Fitting

  • Mark the 4 mounting holes; drill 8.5mm (11/32”). Optional power-wire hole: 12mm (1/2”).
  • Seal the cut edges, then bed with sealant round all holes. Do NOT use a permanent adhesive/sealant (e.g. 5200).
  • Fit the four bolts with washers; the unit falls to one side until fixed (motor weight).
  • Below deck: clamp plate over the bolts, washers, Nylock nuts or Loctite. With silicone-type sealant, let it cure before final tightening.
  • Both motor wires must be joined with joiners or soldered and heat-shrunk.

Electrical Wiring

  • 12V DC supply for the unit and the Freefall. Voltage drop over the complete run must not exceed 10%; do not confuse cable length with boat length.
  • Fully insulated system, type III stranded tinned copper with copper crimp terminals; check polarity (most installs are negative ground).
  • Wire the circuit breaker between the isolator/battery and the switch, as close to the battery as possible. Never bypass it.
  • Freefall: use the correct cable size, no direct connection from the motor wires to the Freefall, do not cross wires on the battery side. Freefall must go down fast; if not, swap the motor wires. Wrong polarity voids the warranty.
  • Mini Drum: rocker switch 68000593, contactor 68000939, 3 A fuse.
  • Comply with USCG, ABYC, NMMA or local regulations.

Operation

Standard

  • Check power is on and the breaker is not tripped (push in to reset).
  • Drop: release the anchor locks, hold DOWN on the rocker, release at the length wanted. Power rode out while the boat falls back to avoid fouling the anchor.
  • Raise: hold UP; release as the anchor approaches the bow roller and inch it home. Over-driving damages the bow roller or rode.

Freefall

  • Drop: release anchor locks, hold DOWN on the Freefall rocker for 6 seconds: freefall starts and the anchor drops.
  • Hold UP on the Freefall rocker for 6 seconds to re-engage the drum main drive.
  • Raise: hold UP on the Drum rocker; slow, short bursts as the anchor reaches the roller.
  • The main drive will not drive the drum in Freefall mode. Engaging the drive while the drum is in use damages the windlass.

This is an anchor recovery device: do not pull the boat to the anchor or break out a fouled anchor with it. Motor gently up to the anchor at idle, never over it. Secure the rode to an independent strong point, never to the windlass.

Servicing

  • Isolate at the breaker/isolator before any work.
  • Bedding-in: check the mounting bolts frequently and tighten as needed.
  • Annually (more often for frequent use): light machine oil sparingly on the drum bearings; inspect and protect all electrical connections; check mounting bolts; check the rode for wear; check for damage and gearbox oil leaks.

Troubleshooting

  • Will not power down: check power and breaker; check wiring and that voltage reaches the motor wires with DOWN pressed. If it does, the motor is defective.
  • Will not power up: check power and breaker; check voltage at the motor with UP pressed; check the Freefall position.
  • Rope not laying properly / tangling: use only the genuine Lewmar CRW rope kit; check the unit's alignment to the bow roller.
