Lewmar Ocean Hatch (Flat Base) — Fitting & Adjustment Instructions

Compliance

Ocean hatches are for all craft types in accordance with ISO/DIS 12216.2(E), design category "A", areas II, III and IV. Fitting vents or other modifications invalidates the compliance.

Cut-Out

  • Flat mounting surface within +/- 1mm; deck/hull thickness 25-70mm (flanged version only).
  • Keep fastenings clear of moulding radii and allow room for the lid to open. Don't work the lid until the lower frame is fixed.
  • Pencil round the inside edge of the lower frame; for hatches with a lower frame flange, enlarge the aperture by 3mm all round. The frame must sit square on the opening; make a template for several hatches.
  • Seal exposed laminate on composite decks; deburr metal decks. The hatch is not a stiffener: stiffen the deck against heavy-weather distortion.

Bedding & Fixing

  • Bedding compound in the lower frame channel: adhesive marine sealant (e.g. silicone), 3mm minimum thickness and compressible so the screws pull the frame down onto the deck.
  • Drill two holes in opposite corners first, then the rest, tightening from the centre out to the edges; clean off surplus sealant.
  • Wood decks: M5 through bolts or marine-grade wood screws. GRP / steel / alloy: M5 through bolts or machine screws into tapped plates.
  • Fixing sizes: M5, 10UNC, 2BA, 3/16", wood screws minimum 40mm long. Hinge fixings: M6 or 1/4" through bolts only.
  • Check the lid closes and locks with even seal pressure.

Use & Care

  • Small vent hatches stop at 90 degrees: don't force them past the stop. Larger hatches are not self-supporting past vertical and will fall fully open.
  • Locked ventilation position: handles closed into the centre slot of the catch block. Don't stand on or load the lid in this position.
  • Wash with soap, water and a soft cloth; never abrasive or solvent cleaners on the acrylic.
  • Keep hands clear of the lever and lid pinch zones.

Friction Lever Adjustment

  • Levers are preset at the factory for correct positioning with minimum opening load.
  • Adjust with the socket head screws on each side of the lever: 4mm (5/32") hex key, about 1/8th of a turn clockwise to increase the holding force, easiest fully open or closed.
  • Don't overtighten. With several levers, set them all to a similar load.
  • Never lubricate the friction levers: it stops them working.
