Installation

  • Specify and install with a competent marine engineer. V9, V10 and V12 are extremely heavy: use a mechanical lift aid.
  • Confirm L/H or R/H chain alignment, a flat deck (pad out camber or sheer), space below deck for the motor/gearbox and cables, and that the handle can turn the drum through 360°.
  • On V9/10/12 the band brake operating position can be rotated in 30° steps.
  • Seal exposed core on sandwich decks. If using silicone-type sealant, let it cure before final tightening. Do not use a permanent adhesive/sealant such as 5200.
Model Deck holes Fixings Max deck thickness
V8 13 mm stud holes; 150 mm and 115 mm cut-outs Studs with Loctite 243; trim to deck + clamp plate + 2 nuts + 5 mm 76 mm (3")
V9 6 × 15 mm bolt holes; 178 mm and 140 mm cut-outs Studs, deck backing plate, M14 nuts with Loctite 243 plus M14 Nyloc 150 mm
V10 / V12 6 × 17 mm bolt holes; 260 mm and 120 mm cut-outs M16 bolts (not supplied), washer and nut with Loctite 243 plus M16 Nyloc 200 mm

M10 30.0 Nm ± 3.0 Nm
M12 50.0 Nm ± 4.0 Nm
M14 79.0 Nm ± 4.0 Nm
M16 121.0 Nm ± 5.0 Nm
  • V8 under deck: 4 motor/gearbox positions; grease the shaft, check the drive key, slide the unit on and bolt up with Loctite 243.
  • V9 under deck: adaptor to the base with 8 × M10×55 bolts and M10 spring washers; coupling on the splined shaft with grub screw; motor/gearbox with 8 × M12×50 bolts. Hydraulic drive with brake needs no coupling.
  • V10/V12 under deck: motor/gearbox bolts to the base via a down tube. The motor/gearbox must not obstruct the chain fall hole.
  • V9, V10 and V12 electric motor/gearboxes need additional support under the motor.
  • Remote brake (optional): V8 cable kit (illustrated with 68000876), handwheel housing secured with M10 / 3/8" CSK bolts; V9/10/12 brake wheel UJ shaft tightened until the brake applies then backed off 3 full turns, stud through deck 20 mm (V9) / 24 mm (V10-12).

  • Cable length is the total run from the battery along the cable route. Voltage drop must not exceed 10%; use type III stranded tinned copper with copper crimp terminals.
  • Fit the supplied circuit breaker close to the battery, dry and accessible. Multi-station switches are wired in parallel; switch wire 1.5 mm² (16 AWG, as printed).
  • AC wiring for V8/9/10/12 is published separately by Lewmar.

The cable tables call the breakers 66000894 (200 A) and 66000895 (250 A); the wiring diagram gives 68000894 and 68000895 (as printed).

Hydraulic System

  • Connect to a hydraulic powerpack with a directional control valve.
  • V8: high-torque motor on a 90° or in-line gearbox; not self-sustaining, so fit a dual pilot operated check valve (POCV); a chain stopper holds the load permanently. Ports A & B 3/4" BSP; Hi-Power drain 1/4" BSP, drain line minimum 6 mm bore, 10 bar.
  • V9/10/12: in-line gearbox with brake, self-sustaining. Section 5.7 gives A & B ports 1/2" BSP and a 1/4" BSP drain (Fig 5.7-2 labels some V9/V10 drives 3/4" BSP); drain line minimum 10 mm (3/8") bore, 10 bar.
  • Hose to A and B ports: reinforced braid to SAE100R2A or DIN 20 021 Part 2. Up to 30 l/min: 1/2" (13 mm) bore; up to 40 l/min: 5/8" (16 mm); up to 57 l/min: 3/4" (19 mm).
  • Minimum hose bend radius 6" (150 mm). Speed follows oil flow; slow running or weak pull points to flow, pressure, swapped ports or kinked pipes.

Operation

  • Release dog drive: tighten the band brake with a winch handle, then turn the top nut anti-clockwise to raise the capstan until the dogs are clear.
  • Engage: lower the capstan onto the gypsy until resistance is felt, back off a quarter turn, press UP/DOWN and the dogs spring into engagement; release the band brake before powered use.
  • Free-fall: dog drive released, then ease the band brake to run and stop the chain.
  • Warping: dogs released, brake on, chain secured to a strong point; at least 3 loose turns on the capstan. Never wrap chain on the capstan.
  • At anchor, hold the chain on a chain stopper; never break out a fouled anchor or pull the boat up with the windlass.

Servicing

  • Regularly: fresh-water wash; strip, clean and lightly grease above-deck parts; check brake band pins move freely and drain holes are clear; repaint any corroded below-deck parts with enamel and grease exposed metal and hose connections.
  • Annually: clean and grease electrical connections, check cables, inspect all below-deck paint.
  • Changing the gypsy: remove shoulder screw and top cap, drum and chain cover, spiral spring clip and tab washer; refit with the gypsy engaged in the band brake, wind the drum down until the dogs clear by 2 mm, threadlock the M6 screw, then wind fully down. Make sure the spiral clip is in its groove.
