Weights from the 2018 drill guides. Single unit: 134 mm long, 40 mm wide, 69 mm high, rope centre line 18 mm above the deck; allow a 96 mm radius for the handle to swing. The XAS uses the same hole spacing as the XA clutch. Maximum holding depends on rope diameter and construction: bigger, firmer rope holds better.

Installation

  • Plan the layout, then drill 6.5 mm (1/4") holes. Check the template hole centres against the clutch.
  • Fit the clutch forward of the winch with the handle opening towards the load.
  • Keep rope deflection small; in a bank, give the most heavily loaded lines the least deflection.
  • Line angle from clutch up to the winch drum: 10° max. Increase the distance or raise the clutch on a wood or Delrin pad.
  • Stainless M6 (1/4") countersunk fasteners with full nuts and washers; silicone around the threads.
  • Foam-sandwich decks need extra reinforcement. Side mounting uses conversion kit XAS-SMNT.
  • Rinse the gripping area of new rope in water before use.

Use & Safety

  • Open the handle fully forward to thread the line.
  • With the handle closed the clutch holds automatically as the winch is eased; allow up to 20 mm (1") run-out as the cam engages.
  • Manual lockdown: lift the handle vertical and lock it down on the loaded rope before easing the winch.
  • Snub the line on the winch before releasing; never flick the handle open under heavy load.
  • Braided fibre rope only: never three-strand or wire.
  • No solvents, polysulphide or polyurethane sealants. Never use a damaged clutch or rope. Wear gloves.

Drill Templates

  • The manual (page 2) carries a single-unit template marked "actual size": print that page at 100% and check the hole centres against the clutch before drilling.
  • The separate drill guide (XAS/1, XAS/2, XAS/3) is drawn at 1:2 on A4, so it is NOT full size as printed. Adjust the printer for the drawing scale and check every dimension before drilling.
  • Drill guide pages 4 and 5 cover the XAS0612/HP and XAS0612/HS side-mount fairing versions: 133 mm long, 39 mm wide, 2 × M6 CSK (5/16", as printed).

Maintenance

  • Flush regularly with fresh water; apply silicone spray or grease when dry.
  • Never use mineral oil or solvent-based lubricants such as WD40: they weaken the moulded composite parts and can cause sudden failure, and they degrade the composite bushes.
  • Spinlock supplies replacement parts and upgrades through its stockists. Warranty is 5 years from purchase by the original owner.
