Spinlock XTR Powerclutch — Installation & Use

Specification

Model Line Ø Max SWL at max line Ø Weight Fasteners
XTR0812/1 8–12 mm (5/16 – 1/2") 1000 kg (2200 lbs) 340 g (12.0 oz) 2 × M8 (5/16")

What It Is

  • Mid-load rope holding clutch for conventional and low-stretch lines of 8–12 mm; product code gives the rope range in mm.
  • Holding load depends on rope diameter and construction: generally the bigger and firmer the rope, the better it holds.
  • 5-year manufacturer's warranty subject to Spinlock terms.

Key Dimensions (mm)

  • Fixing centres 70 (underside).
  • Rope centre line 20 above the base.
  • Handle arc R110 from the centre of handle rotation.
  • Full drawing below; marked "not to scale".

Installation

  • Settle the clutch layout before marking out and drilling the 8.5 mm (11/32") holes.
  • Install forward of the winch, handle opening towards the load, with the smallest possible rope deflection. In a bank, give the most heavily loaded lines the least deflection.
  • The line angle from clutch up to the winch drum should not exceed 10°: increase clutch-to-winch distance or raise the clutch on a wood or Delrin pad.
  • Stainless M8 (5/16") cap or hex head fasteners with full nuts and washers.
  • Silicone sealant around the fastener threads for a watertight seal and easy removal. Never polysulphide or polyurethane sealant.
  • Do not overtighten the fixings. Foam sandwich decks need extra reinforcement: ask your boatyard.
  • Side mounting: conversion kit XTR-SMNT.
  • Rinse the gripping area of new rope in sea water before use.

Use

  • Open the handle fully forward to thread the line.
  • With the handle closed the clutch holds the rope automatically as the load is eased from the winch.
  • Allow up to 20 mm (1") of forward rope movement as the cam engages; grip on new rope improves with use.
  • Two-stage release: the first stage carries no load on the handle, the second releases the line.
  • Release safely by taking the load on a winch drum first.

Safety

  • Braided rope only: never three-strand or wire.
  • Never open the handle with the clutch heavily loaded.
  • Never use the clutch with damaged rope; do not modify any part.
  • Check it is correctly specified and installed before first loading it.
  • Always use hand protection.

Maintenance

  • Flush regularly with fresh water.
  • Inspect carefully before each session.
  • No mineral oil or solvent-based lubricants such as WD40: they degrade the moulded composite parts and bushes and can cause sudden structural failure.

Grip Module Removal

  • Remove the 2 × M5 fixings with a 4 mm hex key.
  • Twist the handle slightly to loosen the handle cap and remove the cap.
  • Unlock the wire loop from the handle and slip the grip module out.
  • Refit: handle on the forward axle, lower the grip module into the body and slide it forward until fully home, hook the wire loop onto the handle, push the plastic link arm down, insert the handle cap fully and secure the M5 fasteners.
