Versions

  • XX – standard Powerclutch for 8–12 mm lines.
  • XXB – ceramic jaws for increased load holding.
  • XXC – ceramic jaws and lightweight body (CTiC Series, black).
  • /L lock open, /S silver anodised, /LS lock open silver anodised.
  • /HS side mounting starboard, /HP side mounting port (XXC: bolted).
  • XXC0812/HBP & /HBS – bonded port / starboard sidemount, for bonding directly onto decks, spars and booms.

Rope Notes

  • Max SWL is the maximum safe holding Spinlock recommends for each product with polyester covered ropes.
  • Check the actual measured diameter under load and the rope maker's load rating and safety factor.
  • Blended covers (Aramid, Technora, Dyneema or Vectran co-braided with polyester or polypropylene) can be harder to hold; ceramic jaw sets can hold other cover blends.
  • Sleeved areas must be fully pre-tensioned with smooth entry and exit tapering.

Operation

  • Feeding a new line (XX0812): push a long screwdriver through the front bullseye onto the lower jaw until it stops, then raise and fully open the handle. This locks the jaws at full clearance. Not needed on lock-open versions.
  • Close the handle and the clutch engages the rope automatically.
  • Release: nothing happens until the handle passes 60 degrees. Normal hand pressure will not release the rope above that load.
  • Always start a release with the handle closed. After a part-opening, cycle the handle fully (line on the winch) so the mechanism resets; otherwise holding drops and the jaws wear.
  • Sleeving: any external sleeve must be a very tight fit, overall Ø not over 12 mm, tapered to run freely. Core inserts give the smoothest transition for fast line speeds.

Lock-Open Versions

  • Latch UP: the line runs freely through the clutch.
  • Latch pushed DOWN with the handle closed: the line is held.
  • To release, open the handle normally, or move the latch UP with the handle closed: once the load is on the winch the jaws release and the line runs free.
  • The jaw stays open until the latch goes back down, even if the handle is cycled.

Installation

Deck Mounting

  • Align the clutch with the rope lead, checking height and keeping the alignment angle to a minimum.
  • Drill two holes for the M8 fasteners using the template. Never drill through the clutch.
  • On spars with no access, tap the surface M8, making sure the material can carry the full clutch load.
  • XX0812 / XXB0812: M8 A4-80 stainless socket cap or CSK machine screws. XXC0812: M8 titanium socket cap or CSK machine screws.
  • Check each pre-assembled hex head sits in its locking moulding, seal the upper threads with silicone and fasten firmly. Through-deck, grind off excess thread.

Getting to the Fasteners

  • XX0812 and XXB0812 come with 2 × high tensile A4-80 stainless hex head fasteners; XXC0812 with 2 × M8 titanium hex head fasteners.
  • The forward fastener is reached from above: remove nut and washer, turn the clutch over, withdraw the M8.
  • For the aft fastener, remove the rear end moulding: lock-open latch down, handle fully open then back to 90° vertical, remove the M5 Allen screw on top.
  • Pull the rear cover out from the top, pivoting around the top, unhook its base and slide the jawset out. No force is needed; force can damage the jawset.

Side Mounting

  • XX0812/HP and /HS are supplied handed for side mounting: remove the jaw set and fasten with 5 × M6 A4-70 stainless fasteners (supplied).
  • XXC0812/HP and /HS come with 5 titanium fasteners, nuts, washers and mounting pad. Keep the pads in place so the XXC stays horizontal and the body does not flex; apply Duralac between the M6 fasteners and the body.
  • Align the rope entry and exit mouldings for smooth running and minimum friction.
  • XXC0812/HBP & /HBS are for bonding; Spinlock gives no bonding data, so use your own engineering and materials guidance.
  • Two XXC0812/HBP and /HBS side mounted back to back ("butterfly") need XX-SMNT so the moulded parts can be removed later.

XXB Drill Template

  • Drawing XXB(2D)_JUL15, scale 1:1 on A3 (420 × 297).
  • 2 off M8 or 5/16" hex head A4-80 stainless fasteners; holes Ø8.5 at 140.0 fixing centres, the first 25.0 from the end.
  • Overall 195 long × 42.0 wide × 96.3 high; line entry and exit height 30.0; handle sweep radius R139.4 (mm).
  • Line size 08–12 mm, max load 2350 kg.
  • Print at actual size (100% scaling) and always check against the 100.0 scale bars before drilling.

The image above is reduced. Download the template PDF and print it at 100% on A3.

Maintenance & Service

Routine: Flush, Drain, Lubricate

  • Flush the mechanism regularly with fresh water through the end bullseyes and the handle pivot area.
  • Keep the drainage holes in both end mouldings clear of debris.
  • Lubricate the handle pivots with silicone grease. Keep lubricant off the rollers and jaw surfaces.
  • Loss of performance is usually lack of maintenance: the XX relies on 2 sets of roller bearings and their running surfaces staying clean.
  • When removing from deck, do not hammer the fasteners from below.

Full Service & Jaw Replacement

  • Done with the clutch still on deck, even banked with others: rope out, latch down, handle open then back to 90°, remove the M5 Allen screw, pull the rear cover and slide the jawset out.
  • Roller cages (both identical): unclip and look for wear or flats; if flat, replace and consider XX-ROLL+. Refit in the correct orientation.
  • Jaw grip surfaces: if aluminium shows through the black anodising, fit a new XX-KIT, XXB-KIT or XXC-KIT.
  • Never fit XXC-JAW in XX clutches.
  • Check link plates on both sides of both jaws, the release pin in the top jaw, and flush the body, roller surfaces and the two drainage runs.
  • Do not remove the handle; it must hold closed and fully open (leaf spring at the front of the wedge).

Re-assembly

  • Latch down (lock-open versions), handle fully open then back to 90°.
  • Insert the jaw assembly with no force, angle the rear moulding back to hook its base, rotate the top flush with the body.
  • Refit the M5 Allen screw, hand tight only.
  • Check the latch up and down and full handle travel, then open the handle and thread the rope.

Handle Replacement

  • XX-HDLB (XX0812): remove the jawset, open the handle fully, remove the two M6 CSK screws on top and slide the handle assembly out the rear.
  • XXC-HDLB (XXC0812): remove the M6 CSK screw on top and punch out the 2 locating pins (Loctited). On side-mounted versions screw an M4 fastener into each pin to lift it.
  • Refit in reverse; M5 Allen screw hand tight.
  • Lock-open conversion: XX0812, XXB0812 and XXC0812 convert to /L with XX-LCK. The latch pivot pin goes through rear cover, latch lever, latch support and spring coils with an audible click.
