Line and Load

Line Ø Load
10 mm (3/8") 900 kg
1980 lb
12 mm (1/2") 1200 kg
2640 lb
14 mm (9/16") 1500 kg
3300 lb
M8 fastener Max torque SWL
A4-50 8 Nm 1200 kg
2640 lb
A4-70 (supplied) 17 Nm 1500 kg
3300 lb
  • Line range 10–14 mm when loaded.
  • Cover must be 100% polyester or blended polyester. Do not use it with unblended Vectran, Dyneema, Spectra or PBO covers.
  • Do not fit it if the cover is loose on the core with no interface layer or coating, or if sleeved areas look under-tensioned or unevenly tapered.
  • Do not fit it where line loads can exceed the stated SWL for the line.

The fitting text says A4-50 fasteners reduce the SWL by 20% to 1200 kg/3300 lb (as printed); the fastener table gives 1200 kg / 2640 lb.

Using the Grip Switch

  • Open (A): switch UP, the line runs freely in and out.
  • Locked (B): switch DOWN, the line pulls in freely but cannot run out.
  • Re-open (C): moving the switch UP while the line is locked primes the ZR. The jaws keep gripping and only latch open when the loaded line is next adjusted or released on the winch.

Fitting

  • Supplied with two A4-70 high-tensile stainless fasteners (2 × M8 button head).
  • Install with the grip switch UP.
  • Line entry: between horizontal and 10 degrees below. Line exit: between horizontal and 15 degrees above (manual).
  • Seal with the ZR silicone sealing washers or silicone on the threads. Never use polyurethane or polysulphide sealants, which degrade the body.
  • Fit the supplied washers under the bolt heads. Do not overtighten: 17 Nm (A4-70), 8 Nm (A4-50).

Drill Template

  • ZR1014, 1:1 on A3 (420 × 297), all dimensions in mm.
  • 140.0 mm fixing centres; footprint 167.7 × 41.9 mm; height 94.0 mm; line centreline 29.0 mm above the base, 21.5 mm to the lower surface of the bullseye.
  • Plan view: entry up to 10.0° either side, exit up to 20.0° either side of the centreline.
  • Side view: rope entry must not be above horizontal (10° max. below); exit must not be below horizontal, up to 20° above.
  • Print at actual size (1:1) on A3 and measure the 140.0 mm fixing centres before drilling.

The instructions give 15° maximum exit angle; the drill template gives 20°. Stay within 15° to satisfy both.

Overload Fuse and Service

Overload Protection

  • A fuse in the upper jaw shears above the 1500 kg/3300 lb SWL and releases the line, protecting the moulded body.
  • Fit a replacement jaw assembly (ZRJAW/10) before using the ZR again.
  • If the fuse fails again, loads are too often above the limit: replace the ZR with a Spinlock ZS jammer or XX clutch.

Routine Checks

  • Regularly remove the line and flush the ZR with fresh water.
  • Every few months remove the rear moulding with a 4 mm Allen key (D); the jaw assembly lifts out in one piece (E).
  • Replace the jaws if the black anodising on the grip surfaces is visibly worn.
  • Keep jaw bearing surfaces clean and smooth; check the three springs for alignment and function.
  • Replace the body immediately if it is damaged or cracked.
  • Wash body and jaws with warm soapy water and a stiff fibre brush; when dry, lightly grease the jaw slider surfaces with waterproof silicone grease.
  • Refit the jaws and rear moulding and re-reeve the line with the switch UP.
