ZS1014B, ZS1618B and XXC0812/HBP/HBS are made for bonding directly onto spars, booms and decks. ZS1214, ZS1014C, ZS1014B, ZS1618C and ZS1618B come with jaws and rear blocks prepared for the ZS-RLB Remote Lock Back Switch.

Before choosing the rope, check

  • The actual measured diameter under load.
  • Other cover blends can be held with ceramic jaw sets.
  • The cover is a close fit on the core, with an interface layer or fibre coating. Nominal section should be round.
  • Sleeved areas are fully pre-tensioned, with smooth entry and exit tapering.
  • The load rating and safety factor recommended by the rope manufacturer.

ZS Alloy & Carbon Jammers

  • Open: pull the handle out until the latch clicks. The latch must be fully engaged to hold the jaws open.
  • Lock: hoist and tension on the winch. Release the latch and push the jaws forward onto the rope, keeping firm pressure on the handle as the load is eased onto the jammer. The jaws slide forward a few millimetres as the load is secured.
  • Re-open: take the full load back onto the winch first. Only then pull the handle back and engage the latch.
  • ZS jammers can only be released after the load has been transferred to the winch drum.

ZS Open (mobile) Jammer

  • Secure the strop to a padeye or winch base strong enough for the load, aligned as close to the line of load as possible.
  • Open the sideplate, engage the jammer on the line and close it with the sideplate latch securely closed.
  • Slide the jammer along the line until the strop is tight (reduces runout), then release the jaw latch.
  • Ease the original line off the winch so the strop and jammer take the load.
  • To release: hold the handle and slide the body forward. Do not pull the handle back. Leave enough slack in the strop to disengage the jaws.
  • Before loading, the coverplate must be fully engaged and the latches locked into the location pins, or the body can deform permanently.

XX / XXC0812 Powerclutch

  • Optimised for 8–12 mm lines.
  • Rope feeding (XX0812): push the lower jaw back with a long screwdriver through the front bullseye, then raise and fully open the handle to lock the jaws at maximum clearance. Not needed on the Lock Open version.
  • Closing the handle engages the rope automatically.
  • Release does not begin until the handle is rotated beyond 60 degrees.
  • Always start a release with the handle closed. If the handle was only part-opened, cycle it fully with the line on the winch, or holding power drops and the jaws wear.
  • Any sleeving must be a very tight fit, with an overall diameter not over 12 mm and a taper to run freely.
  • In strong winds, transfer the load to the winch before releasing to avoid rope damage.

Lock Open versions (XXC0812, XX0812/L)

  • Latch UP: line runs freely through the clutch.
  • Latch DOWN with handle closed: line is held.
  • To release, open the handle normally, or move the latch UP with the handle closed: the jaws release automatically once the load is on a winch.
  • The jaws stay open until the latch is returned to DOWN, even if the handle is cycled.

Installation

ZS Jammers

  • On deck, fit the jammer forward of the winch, close enough to work the handle and latch, with room behind it to pull the jaw assembly.
  • Supplied with A4-70 stainless studs. Screw them a maximum of 15 mm into the body: over-tightening can damage the internal bearing surface.
  • Drilling templates come with the product. Double-check the hole pattern: it is not reversible.
  • Side mounting (Alloy): replace the six body fasteners with longer bolts, at least A4-70 stainless, to reach the rated loads.
  • ZS1014B and ZS1618B are designed to be side-bonded or bonded to decks, spars and booms. Spinlock gives no bonding data: use your own engineering data.
  • Not designed for high side loads: if the lead to the winch exceeds 10 degrees, fit lead blocks or organisers aft of the jammers.
  • Clean after installation before first use to avoid jaw damage, slippage and rope damage. Lubricant is supplied.

XX / XXC0812 Clutch

  • Align the clutch with the rope lead, checking height and minimising the angle.
  • Drill two holes for the M8 fasteners using the template. Never drill through the clutch.
  • Where there is no access below, tap the surface M8, making sure it can carry the full clutch load.
  • Replacement fasteners: M8 A4-80 stainless socket cap or CSK machine screws (XX0812), M8 titanium (XXC0812).
  • Check each pre-assembled fastener head sits in its locking moulding; seal the upper threads with silicone sealant.
  • Access to the aft fastener: Lock Open latch down, lift the handle 50 mm, remove the M5 Allen screw, then pull the rear moulding and jaw assembly out of the body.
  • XX0812/HP and /HS (and XXC0812/HP, /HS) are supplied handed for side mounting with 5 × M6 fasteners.

ZS-RLB Remote Lock Back Switch

  • For ZS1214, ZS1618, ZS1014C, ZS1618C, ZS1014B and ZS1618B jammers: lets the jaws be pre-tensioned for remote release.
  • Choose a very low-stretch control line that can be spliced; tie it to the jaw set, thread it through the spring and rear block and refit the rear block.
  • Splice the control line to the RLB spring eye with an adjustable splice and give it a free, low-friction run to the jammer.
  • With the jaws loaded on the correct line and the RLB closed, adjust the splice until just taut. Changes in rig set-up or line diameter need re-adjustment.
  • Operation: open the RLB to pre-tension the trip line; when load is taken on the winch the RLB opens the jaws automatically.

Maintenance

ZS Jammers

  • Flush regularly with fresh water.
  • Jaw removal (Alloy / Carbon): remove the rear-block screw, the rear block, then pull out the handle and jaw assembly.
  • ZS Open: open the side plate, remove the jaw engagement spring, compress the jaws and extract sideways.
  • Replace jaws when silver aluminium shows through the black anodised grip surface.
  • White jaw bearings must be clean and smooth. Lubricate with silicone grease only; no mineral oil or solvent lubricants like WD40.
  • Replacement jaw sets must be installed with the grease provided.

XX / XXC Clutch

  • Flush the mechanism with fresh water through the end bullseyes and the handle pivot area.
  • Keep the lower drainage holes in both end mouldings clear.
  • Lubricate the handle pivots with silicone grease. Keep lubricant off the rollers and jaw surfaces.
  • Full service: remove the rope, latch down (Lock Open), lift the handle, remove the screw retaining the rear moulding, rotate and pull out the moulding and jaw assembly.
  • Inspect roller cages for flats (replace, or upgrade to XX-ROLL+), jaw grip surfaces, jaw spring, linkplates, release pin and the body roller surfaces.
  • Never fit XXC-JAW in an XX clutch. Do not remove the handle for a normal service.
  • Pre 2010 XX0812 jaws need the XX-KIT upgrade.

Do not hammer the fasteners from below when removing an XX0812 from the deck: they can damage the mechanism and the rear moulding.
